A nice representation of its composite tobaccos. The bright tang of Dominican, sultry shy of smooth Mexican, ripe maduro, in that order. Overtones of lemony black pepper, cayenne, dark roast java bean, dark chocolate shavings, black walnut. Heavy & crisp. Undertones are a slowly schvitzing patent leather, skim milk creaminess, anise. If our reviews consisted of rating cigars after only the cold draw and the first third, the Villiger Cuellar Black Forest Toro Gordo would be in contention for my cigar of the year. For that short time, the profile was rich, aggressive and insanely complex, with apple cinnamon, dried tea leaves and coffee beans on the palate along with some distinct vanilla bean sweetness on the retrohale that pulls everything together. Unfortunately, that first third is by far the best part of the cigar, as after that the profile begins a sharp decline from which it never recovers, highlighted by an increasingly aggressive bitterness on the finish. In addition, while the draw was excellent overall, the burn on each of the three samples had to be touched up multiple times. in the end, while there is quite a bit to like about the Villiger Cuellar Black Forest in the first third, if you stop smoking after that you won’t be missing much.

Villiger Cuellar Black Forest cigars don’t come in the typical blowout bin bundles I’m accustomed to reviewing. These premium smokes are actually packaged in boxes, but don’t get me wrong, they still go for a rock-solid bargain. I’ve already unloaded my unabridged praise of Villiger White Forest cigars in a previous review. Let’s take a walk on the dark side and find out how Villiger Black Forest stacks up in a 6-by-54 Toro Gordo.

The Villiger Cuellar Black Forest Toro Gordo is a fantastic cigar and one of the best I have smoked from Villiger in a while. They really got a great blend out of Tabacalera Palma and what a nice Mexican San Andres offering. This is definitely a maduro I will come back to down the road and one I would highly recommend.
