Known primarily for its massive and venerable machine-made cigar business, Villiger has been determined to create not just a good, but a great premium cigar. It wasn't about the money, as Villiger is already a billion dollar company. It stemmed from owner and chairman Heinrich Villiger's love and appreciation for premium cigars. His company finally achieved greatness with La Flor de Ynclan.Few might remember this brand's lackluster debut. The cigar was released with little fanfare, and consumer response was lukewarm at best. It was discontinued and, for the most part forgotten—but Villiger refused to let it go. He went back to the drawing board and enlisted the skills of José Matias Maragoto to reblend the Flor de Ynclan from top to bottom. The new La Flor de Ynclan—reblended, repackaged, reimagined—was reintroduced to the market in 2017.Now, the cigar is a fantastic smoke, sweet and charming from first puff to last, anchored by simple-yet-pleasing notes of chocolate and salt, and then refined by more precise intonations of walnut and orange marmalade. It's a welcome change, giving Villiger—which has made cigars since the 1800s—its first entry into Cigar Aficionado's Top 10.

Villiger Cigars announced the Villiger La Flor De Ynclan in June of 2017 and was shown off at the 2017 IPCPR trade show. Villiger made a small amount of La Flor De Ynclan over 10 years before its release, but Heinrich Villiger was unsatisfied with the results. The tobacco was set aside to age and the blend was perfected, and finally was ready for production. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. La Flor De Ynclan was blended by Jose Matias Maragoto and rolled at ABAM Cigar Factory in the Dominican Republic. The blend uses an Ecuadorian wrapper, Indonesian binder, and filler from Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. It was originally released in three sizes in 25 count boxes Robusto 5X50 – $11.00, Torpedo 6X52 – $12.00, Churchill 7X48 – $12.00. Since then, lancero 6 3/4X43 $121and toro 6X52 – $13.00 viotlas have been added.

A thin vanilla cream made tangy by a medicinal citrus note. Acidity lasts longer than in the Robusto* but hits less egregiously. Tick better complexity/roundness. Brown sugary through-out. White progresses to black pepper, particularly through schnoz**. Sharp cedar/blonde-roasted java. Suede-enveloped dirt under-belly. Tastes a bit raw. Pack softens but draw holds well; slight curvature to burn.

Back in 2017, Villiger launched a fantastic blend, La Flor de Ynclan, which cracked the top 10 in Cigar Aficionado’s ‘Top 25 Cigars of the Year.’ Villiger La Flor de Ynclan is available in a handful of traditional sizes, but my personal favorite is the 5 x 50 Robusto. Villiger Cigars have been around since the late 1800s. The brand is based in Europe and is best-known for producing small-format machine-made cigars.

The Flor de Ynclan release in 2017 was a great cigar, but they've managed to create a Lancero that represents a peak of flavor performance. There is no doubt in my mind the Villiger La Flor de Ynclan Lancero Especial is a cigar that is going to be talked about on every top list at the end of 2018.
