Warped Companion de Warped
Blind Man's Puff · Mar 13, 2024 · December 2021
At the end of 2021, Warped Cigars introduced the Companion de Warped. Crafted in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera La Isla, a factory established by Hostos Fernández Quesada in late 2020, the Companion de Warped, which follows the Chinchalle as the second Warped cigar produced at this factory, stands out for its 4 1/2 x 48 Rothschild size, a vitola selected for its ability to present the blend’s characteristics harmoniously. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Kyle Gellis, the mind behind Warped Cigars, opted for a blend that incorporates a Mexican San Andrés wrapper—a choice that had only been made once before by the brand, with the El Oso Mama. This wrapper is complemented by a Dominican binder and fillers from both the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua, with a notable 80 percent of the filler originating from the Dominican Republic. This composition is designed to deliver a medium-plus body experience, with Gellis noting flavors of chocolate, black pepper, floral notes, earth, oak, and sugar. The Companion de Warped was developed with the idea of it being an everyday cigar, inspired by the discovery of the San Andrés wrapper leaf during a sourcing trip in the Dominican Republic. This inspiration led to the creation of the cigar that aims to integrate seamlessly into a smoker’s daily routine, packaged in 25-count boxes with a single cigar MSRP of $12.

If you like an earthier, robust, and decently peppery profile, the Companion de Warped should deliver quite well. The flavors are rich and balanced, and impressively complex on a number of occasions, missing only some more pronounced creaminess and sweetness that it tries to get to multiple times, making for a valiant effort at being a truly stellar cigar. The flavors and aroma are able to shine so brightly because of how well-made the cigars are, as each of the three samples smoked flawlessly from start to finish. A very impressive cigar that offers an immense amount of flavor and stimulation in a compact vitola and wastes no puffs in delivering a very enjoyable smoking experience.

A near-black, rustic-looking robusto with a flat head. The even burn and draw produce a predominately oaky smoke with spicy bursts of crushed red pepper sweetened by notes of licorice and raisin before a bitter vermouth finish.

From the U.S., to Nicaragua, and now the Dominican Republic, Warped has slowly expanded their manufacturing reach over the course of eight years in business. Helping to punctuate the change of pace is the Warped Companion cigar, making use of a San Andrés wrapper for only the second time in the company's portfolio. Fitting to the brand, Warped didn't blend the conventional, full-bodied San Andrés maduro. Instead, Companion is medium-light throughout the majority (ending on medium), with subtle flavors that range from earth to bitter espresso and black licorice. However, a firm draw, inconsistencies between samples, and a lack of an "it factor" favor component detracted from the experience, with the profile coming across as charred or monotonous at times. When given a slow and steady pace, the Companion can make for an enjoyable, contemplative experience—perhaps doing its title justice.

I really enjoyed the Warped Companion de Warped. The profile grabbed my attention throughout, and I liked how it went back and forth between sweet and spicy. The sweet fruit bread, coffee and cocoa qualities were great. It had a nice strength and body level as well. Burn was not as good as I would have liked, but overall, not a major issue. A nice blend that caught me by surprise.
