There's something about the spartan packaging of the Warped Serie Gran Reserva 1988 that makes one instantly curious. It's a simple, unvarnished slide-lid box—nothing too unusual there. But the lone crown burned into the lid and the clean label on the side of the cabinet really make you want to know what's inside. Adding to the mystique is the number 976212 printed on each band.Brand owner Kyle Gellis knows that design in the cigar world is extremely important. An intriguing aesthetic builds anticipation, and that's a precursor to the overall smoking experience. Over the past few years, Warped has accrued a dedicated following, and smokers have truly responded to his business model, combining small-batch production and quaint packaging evocative of old lithography with a sophisticated, modern twist that can span from the understated to the ornate.The number 1988 refers to the birth year of Gellis, who will turn 32 in 2020. The Serie Gran Reserva only comes in one size, a robusto, but one size may be all he needs. It's difficult to imagine that this cigar could be improved upon in another format.The blend is a mélange of Nicaraguan tobaccos grown by agricultural giant Aganorsa that come together brilliantly with a balanced profile of malted chocolate, coffee bean and an earthy undertone, all of which reflect the packaging: noticeable but never obtrusive and with tasteful restraint.

I mentioned above that this cigar was somewhat full in strength (at least more than expected). I think this cigar is what I like to call "sneaky strong." With the refined medium body, you might not expect or notice the nicotine strength until you’ve finished the cigar. On more than one occasion, I’ve had to grab a sugary snack after finishing one of these. After a lively start, there was a bit of a lull throughout the middle third (in terms of excitement), instead featuring a more linear, yet still delicious, experience. A complex and refined profile, combined with the cigar's surprisingly low cost, makes Serie Gran Reserva 1988 extremely easy to recommend. Enthusiasts should be jumping at the chance to stock their humidors with this robusto—an experience that is fitting for both daily and even celebratory smoking sessions.

I have been a fan of Kyle Gellis creations for a long time, and look forward to new releases from Warped whenever I hear about them. The Serie Gran Reserva 1988 was no exception, and I found it to have a profile that is full of both richness and nuance, with a wonderful ever-present white pepper note on the retrohale and maple sweetness on the finish that increased the complexity in the flavors quite a bit. While the dominant flavors shift from earth to almonds and oak as the smoke progresses, the profile is exceedingly creamy throughout. While I did not enjoy the Serie Gran Reserva 1988 quite as much as the Black Honey , it was close enough for me to recommend it wholeheartedly to those who are looking for a full-flavored, medium-bodied cigar.

Overall, the Warped Serie Gran Reserva 1988 was pretty average and dropped down in enjoyment as it went along. If you're a fan of Warped or like cedar in your cigars, it's worth a try. For me, I'll be in no hurry to revisit it, but would smoke it if one was handed to me.
