Crafted as an emotional, loving homage to Aganorsa's legendary late master blender Arsenio Ramos, this cigar is rolled at TABSA in Estelí. Recreating Arsenio's favorite personal blend using a Nicaraguan Corojo '99 wrapper over Criollo '98 binder and fillers, it delivers a sublime medium-to-full smoke brimming with floral sweetness, cinnamon, cedar, and brown sugar.

We had our first look at the Aganorsa Leaf Arsenio just before the 2024 PCA trade show. It was the first batch of the blend and it certainly impressed our panel – it scored 91 points in the Jul/Aug 2024 issue. While that score qualified it as a candidate for this list, the samples we re-tasted at the end of the year significantly outperformed those early smokes. Pleasant notes of cedar and creamsicle appear on first puffs, but the smoke becomes increasingly complex with impressions of hazelnut, baking spices, a touch of earth and a creamy, praline finish. This robusto draws well with a mostly even burn.

The latest release from AGANORSA Leaf is a tribute to the late master blender, Arsenio Ramos. The new AGANORSA Leaf Arsenio follows the footsteps of the retired Casa Fernandez Arsenio and Arsenio Oro lines. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend features a corojo wrapper from Jalapa, Nicaragua, paired with two binders: criollo 98 and tobacco from Estelí. The fillers are sourced from AGANORSA ‘s own farms in Condega and Jalapa. It is available in three sizes: Corona (6 x 44) for $14.99 (box of 15, $224.85), Robusto (5 1/4 x 54) for $15.99 (box of 15, $239.85), and Toro (6 x 52) for $16.99 (box of 15, $254.85). For 2024, production is limited to 2,000 boxes each for the Robusto and Toro, and 1,500 boxes for the Corona, Arsenio Ramos’ preferred size. Ramos, a pivotal figure in the Cuban tobacco industry, brought his expertise to AGANORSA after leaving Cuba in the early 2000s. His legacy continues through this blend, a nod to his remarkable contributions and the unique flavors he helped craft. The new line will debut at the 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show in Las Vegas and will be shipping to stores this month.

From the first puff, the AGANORSA Leaf Arsenio Corona seems destined to be a real treat for the senses, starting off with a profile rich in the pepper and spice that is a signature of the company's blending style, something largely influenced by Arsenio Ramos, the man that this cigar is named for. It has moments where it can be big and bold, and then moments where it is nuanced, layered and complex, almost seeming like it is trying to show off its agility and ability to engage and stimulate the senses in any number of ways. Through the first two thirds of the cigar, there is little to take issue with and plenty to enjoy, including an absolutely diving aroma wafting off the cigar while it is at rest. Unfortunately, the final third sees combustion issues arise, and while I'm not sure how much of a correlation there is to the flavor change, the two come hand-in-hand. I'd like to think that giving these a bit more time might help that final third improve and get on the level of the first two thirds, which are stellar examples of a well-developed and executed blend.

The Aganorsa Leaf Arsenio Corona had a dynamic and engaging first third. The second and last thirds had a lot of flavor components but I didn't find them as coherent as the first third. Overall, the cigar delivered an above average flavor profile with perfect construction. I would likely smoke another Arsenio again, and I would want to try it in either the Robusto or Toro formats to see how they stacked up.
