With Aganorsa Leaf offering one of the most unique, distinct profiles on the market, it's a very exciting prospect that we will now be treated to an equivalent experience on the darker side of the flavor spectrum. Nightwatch proved an admirable start, offering an assortment of highly specific flavor notes—the kind I find are most prevalent in completely vertical operations such as this. While there were some construction issues and somewhat of a downturn in the second half, the brilliant cocoa/cream/pastry flavors were enough to have me contemplating them long after the smoke had settled. Greater things are yet to come from Aganorsa Leaf—I have a feeling that Nightwatch is only the beginning.

Aganorsa Leaf Guardian of the Farm Nightwatch Orpheus

Back in June of last year, Aganorsa Leaf announced an extension to their Guardian of the Farm line, Guardian of the Farm Nightwatch. In this version, blenders Max Fernandez and Kyle Gellis of Warped Cigars Aganorsa’s proprietary Shade Grown Corojo Maduro wrapper to makea more intense smoke. That is the same wrapper found on the Aganorsa Leaf Signature Maduro. The Guardian of the Farm line gets its name from the dogs that stand watch over their tobacco fields. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Guardian of the Farm Nightwatch comes the same four sizes as the original: Rambo (4.5 x 48), JJ (box pressed 5.25 x 50), Campeon (6 x 52 109 head), and Orpheus (6 x 44). All are in boxes of 25 and MSRP is between $8.50 and $9.95. The only difference in format between the original blend and Nightwatch JJ is box pressed and the Apollo has changed its name to Orpheus. Some of the artwork for Nightwatch was created by Dean Keever, of Tree House made famous for art design of beer can.

If you'd enjoyed the original Guardian of the Farm—as I did—but felt like it needed a stronger version—which I didn't—then the Guardian of the Farm Nightwatch should be right up your alley. It's strong almost immediately out of the gates, and while it takes a few opportunities to let off the gas, it never dips below medium-plus. Earth and pepper are prominent, as is nicotine strength, so should you light one up, be prepared for a strong, flavorful cigar. Personally, I've rarely been let down by the original blend, and save for the occasional desire for something stronger, would probably gravitate towards that cigar, but the Nightwatch certainly delivers on almost every front, only stumbling with some sporadic burn and combustion issues. Top it off with a nod to the canines who guard the tobacco that went into this cigar, a fun intangible that adds a bit of a feel-good backstory, and this is a solid cigar worth giving a shot.
