Despite a firm draw, the cigar doesn't make you work too hard for its rich and gooey flavor, nor does it weigh down the palate with overly dark/bitter qualities. In April of this year, Aganorsa Leaf announced a sequel to their successful 2021 Rare Leaf Reserve, Rare Leaf Reserve Maduro. This new cigar is exclusive to their Aganorsa Select Program members. As with the original Rare Leaf blend, the company says the maduro uses only select lots on their best farms that produce the best leaf unique in both flavor and aroma. They have also stated that this is the boldest cigar in the Aganorsa portfolio to date. The blend uses a San Andres Maduro wrapper, double binder, and fillers consisting entirely of Aganorsa grown tobaccos from Jalapa and Estelí. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Aganorsa Leaf Rare Leaf Reserve comes in three sizes: Robusto (5.25 x 52), Toro (6 x 54), and a box pressed Belicoso (6 x52). All three vitolas are presented in 15-count boxes. MSRP goes from $13.50 to $14.50.

Rare Leaf Reserve Maduro Belicoso

Other than a minor issue with flavor in the final third of my second cigar, the Rare Leaf Reserve Maduro Torpedo is an excellent example of a nicely constructed, well-blended and well-balanced creation. Although the first half of the cigar is quite enjoyable, the blend really takes off in the final third: that is when the main almond flavor is joined by a distinct coffee bean note, while the reduced amount of black pepper on the retrohale paves the way for a new floral sweetness to emerge. If you throw in the excellent construction—only one cigar needed a couple of minor burn corrections in the second third, and there were no issues whatsoever with the draws or the smoke production—it is easy to call the Rare Leaf Reserve Maduro Belicoso a winner in just about every way.

The Aganorsa Leaf Rare Leaf Reserve Maduro Robusto started out with some dynamic flavor combinations. By the second third, the profile was pleasant but linear, and that carried through the last third as well. While the price point on this cigar is quite reasonable for the market, there isn't anything here that's compelling for me that I'd choose over the other Aganorsa offerings.
