The AJ Fernandez Enclave Broadleaf Robusto is not yet released, but I was lucky enough to be handed one in Nicaragua by the one and only AJ Fernandez himself. The band on the Enclave Broadleaf is similar to the regular Enclave line, with red accents replacing the blue accents on the normal band, and a secondary band that reads “Broadleaf.” It will be offered in five sizes: Robusto (5 x 52), Toro (6 1/2 x 54), Belicoso (6 x 52), Churchill (7 x 52) and Gordo (5 1/2 x 58). The original Enclave line use an Ecuadorian habano wrapper and is described as a blend between father and son, Ismael and Abdel Fernández. This one uses a Pennsylvania broadleaf maduro wrapper.

A while back I reviewed the original Enclave blend from AJ Fernandez, and today I’m smoking the dark and toothy Maduro version called Enclave Broadleaf in a 6.5-by-54 Toro. What I like most about AJ’s cigars are their consistency and their price. His production has exploded over the past decade, blending cigars for his own portfolio as well as making several lines under contract for the likes of Foundation, Southern Draw, and Cuban-legacy brands, including Romeo y Julieta and Montecristo.

Spice, earth, and toast flow from the draw to the retrohale. Spice dominates on the finish without being an annoyance.Smooth draw and a ton of smoke. Excellent.Flaky ash holds on to a wavy burn line, which needs quite a bit of help to keep in line.Spice tapers off as sugar and honey begin to subtly mingle.This cigar was smooth and enjoyable

Some nice chocolate and baking notes were present at times while dark wood was the consistent theme throughout. The AJ Fernandez Enclave Broadleaf is a good evening/after dinner cigar and one I wouldn't mind revisiting in a smaller vitola to see how it smokes. If you're an AJ or broadleaf fan, then this is definitely one to try.
