Arturo Fuente Rare Pink Vintage 1960’s Séries Sophisticated Hooker

The name is certainly curious. And if you’re familiar with Carlos Fuente Jr.’s sense of humor, it won’t surprise you that there’s a double entendre here. Sophisticated Hooker refers to the name of a fishing boat (“hooker” being a term for a fisherman) the Arturo Fuente owner and blender remembers from his younger days. It’s the largest size in the Rare Pink line, a series of shapely figurados, much like Fuente’s Hemingway series. Only this blend is completely different from that found in Hemingways. It’s also a cigar with a social cause. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of every box goes to fund breast cancer research, hence the bright pink boxes. Pink is the official color of the breast cancer awareness movement. The brand had only four sizes when it was launched in the spring of 2021, and this wasn’t one of them. Later that year, at the first Big Smoke Meets WhiskyFest, the seminar audience puffed a sneak preview of the Sophisticated Hooker. It’s in the market now, but still in limited production. The cigar is as intriguing as the name. First puffs are cedary and herbal, but the cigar takes on a nutty, graham cracker sweetness showing big notes of red meat, black pepper and caramel before the sweet-and-nutty finish.

In 2020, Arturo Fuente announced a new ultra limited release, Rare Pink Vintage 1960’s. This new series was inspired by the social upheavals that took place during the 1960’s and had a big impact on Carlito Fuente ‘s life. Arturo Fuente donates $13 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for every box sold. Liana Fuente, daughter of Carlito Fuente, has lead an effort at the company and throughout the industry to raise awareness for breast cancer and raise money to fight it. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend for the Rare Pink Vintage 1960’s uses an Ecuadorian wrapper, and fillers from both the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua, including Fuente owned farms in Estelí. It launched in four sizes, all of which are in a perfecto shape and are from the Fuente Hemmingway line: Short Story (4 x 42/49) – $7.40, Signature (6 x 46) – $9.95, Work of Art (4 7/8 x 46/60) – $10.35, and Happy Ending (5 1/2 x 53) – $11.85. Two new sizes were added this year, a 3 3/4 x 54 perfecto and a 7 1/4 x 53 perfecto. There is also a planned 7 th size that Carlito Fuente Jr. describes as a Lancero Figurado that will mostly likely not ship until next year. This cigar is harder to find than anyone anticipated, and if you find it, you will almost certainly pay a lot over the retail asking price.

Arturo Fuente Rare Pink Vintage 1960's Short Story

A new limited Arturo Fuente blend does not come around very often, so I was thrilled to be the one reviewing the Rare Pink Vintage 1960's Short Story. What I found was an extremely complex blend where the main flavors of cocoa nibs and creamy oak were consistent pretty much from the first puff to the last, while the secondary flavors were constantly changing and evolving to the point where my palate sometimes had trouble keeping up. There were some minor issues—specifically, burn issues in the first third and the fact that the cigar got hot very quickly if I wasn't careful—but they never come close to being problematic enough to ruin the experience. This is a very enjoyable blend that is easy to recommend for looking for a shorter lighter cigar that is full of flavor, assuming you can actually find them.

The Arturo Fuente Rare Pink Vintage 1960’s Sophisticated Hooker is significantly better than the Short Story offering. The cigar can grow and show complexities and transitioning. There was depth with the cigar, and a nice overall flavor profile from beginning to end. The burn was not perfect, but there were little problems and the draw was great. I loved the salted wood, dark cocoa, coffee, cream and barnyard notes.
