Firewalker is the second in a series of CAO Arcana cigars. These cigars are made in Nicaragua with Nicaraguan fillers and binder, and an Ecuadorian Habano Rosado wrapper. An archaic Chincagre method of aging was applied to the Nicaraguan filler tobaccos used in Firewalker's blend. To find out more about the Chincagre method, please refer to thepress release. CAO Arcana Firewalker cigars are available in one limited edition size measuring 6½ x 56, and are priced at $11.99 per cigar. These cigars were released in February 2022. Right from the start, the sample CAO Arcana Firewalker cigar delivered a generous volume of smoke and had a great draw. The body started off in the medium range, but edged up a bit to medium-plus (3+ on a 5-scale) after 15 to 20 minutes. It was at this point that I removed the very large band from the cigar. The initial flavors were a mellow earthy taste accompanied by a modest amount of spice along with some natural tobacco sweetness. After almost 10 minutes into the cigar, a woodsy taste entered into the mix, and the combination of flavors was well balanced and very enjoyable. After about 40 minutes into the cigar, the wood flavor started to become more predominate until the cigar went out five minutes later. After the one (and only) relight during the entire duration of the 75-minute smoking session, the woodsy taste backed off just a bit and the flavors regained a near-perfect balance. I enjoyed the CAO Arcana Firewalker cigar all the way down to just 1½ inches remaining. All throughout the smoke, the cigar had a perfect draw, held a long ash, and maintained an even burn. No touch-ups were needed (but one relight after 45 minutes). The CAO Arcana Firewalker cigar is averyenjoyable smoke that is worthy of an outstanding rating of 4.75 points on a 5-point scale. This cigar is so good that it was hard to smoke slowly, and since it delivered a generous volume of smoke, there was never a need for double puffing. I enjoyed this cigar from start to finish, and highly recommend picking up a few sticks before the limited supply of 5,000 boxes in the U.S. market is all gone.

CAO Arcana Mortal Coil

Earlier this year, General Cigar announced a new line in the CAO brand: The Arcana Series. The first to come out was the CAO Arcana Mortal Coil. The idea behind the Arcana series is to showcase secrets and traditional of old tobacco techniques passed down for generations. Mortal Coil is blended with Andullo tobacco, one of the oldest tobacco fermentation methods in the Dominican Republic. Instead of using a traditional pilon to ferment the tobacco, Andullo tobacco is wrapped in palm tree pods called “yaguas” and are then compressed with a rope. The old-world process takes two years to complete, much longer than a current method. The final product is rough and leathery. There have been a few other cigars to use Andullo tobacco over the years, most notably, Ventura Project 805, La Aurora ADN Dominicano, H. Upmann Hispaniola by Jose Mendez, and the VegaFina Fortaleza 2 Andullo. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend uses a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Connecticut Shade binder, and a fillers including Honduran Jamastran, Nicaraguan Esteli, Dominican Piloto Cubano, and Dominican Andullo. The CAO Arcana Mortal Coil comes in only one size, a 6 1/8 x 50 toro that sells for $10.99. They come in 20 count boxes and only 5,000 were made. It is rolled at STG Estelí.

At its core, the CAO Arcana Stokk is a tale of two very different cigar profiles: the first half is full of more traditional—dare I say “tame”—flavors of oak and gritty earth, along with some enjoyable maple syrup sweetness on the retrohale. That all changes around the halfway point, as much more aggressive flavors take over, including main notes of campfire and smoked meat along with significantly more black pepper and a new blackberry sweetness on the retrohale. Of course, such a major change in the second half also affected the overall balance, although it was less of an issue than I would have expected. This is easily the most enjoyable member of the Arcana Series that I have smoked so far, and a great choice if you are looking for a cigar with an interesting twist to change up your regular lineup.

There are some prominent veins to the wrapper of this hefty cigar, which is topped with a pigtail cap. Initial impressions of woody sweetness, cashew and nougat are offset by a persistent charry bitterness. Tasters also experienced inconsistency with the draw and burn.

The CAO Arcana Mortal Coil cigar offers a unique experience of old-world tobacco processing traditions. The tobacco and smoking experience itself makes for a very sweet/acidic fermented tobacco experience that, for some, might be what they are looking for; but for others, may be too overpowering of a flavor. This might be best for infused/sweet-tip cigar smokers, or hobbyists that are looking to transition from those types of cigars into other, more traditional profiles. The cigar might even be a good choice for a beginner cigar smoker. Overall, it's a unique and interesting smoke, but I believe it falls short for something I'd more than a couple times.

The CAO Arcana Stokk had an average flavor profile throughout although it had the unique components of the smoky oak and smoky meatiness. I've always been intrigued by this style of cigar, but it seems very hard to put it all together and have it deliver a full cigar that is enjoyable as it usually ends up as a profile that only excels in small doses and this cigar was no different. The combination just didn't lend itself to this size of cigar and it isn't something I'd see myself returning to.
