Earlier this summer, General Cigar announced a new line of cigars for it’s CAO brand: CAO Bones. This new line isn’t just a cigar, it is a celebration of dominoes, and dice. This cigar was meant to be smoked while doing other activities, such as playing dice and domino games, but also be able to hold its own as a cigar. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. CAO Bones is described as a medium-to-full bodied cigar and is also designed to pair well with a variety of drinks. The blend uses a four year old Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Connecticut Shade binder, and two varieties of Honduran tobacco from Jamastran and La Entrada, along with Nicaraguan Estelí and Dominican Piloto Cubano filler. Bones is a regular production smoke and is made at STG Estelí. It comes in four sizes, each named after classic games of dominoes: Chicken Foot (Robusto): 5” x 54 – SRP per cigar $7.49, Blind Hughie (Toro): 6” x 54 – SRP per cigar $7.99, Matador (Churchill): 7.25” x 54 – SRP per cigar $8.49, and Maltese Cross (Gigante): 6” x 60 – SRP per cigar $8.99. Each box has 20 cigars, two standard 16mm dice, and a felt-covered inside lid which is a suitable surface for playing dice.

After smoking three of the CAO Bones Matadors, I’m left with the thought that there can be too much of a good thing. While the CAO Bones isn’t the most complex or flavor-spanning blend I’ve smoked, it is generally enjoyable, and there are a number of spots where the profile is quite good. There’s plenty of dry earth, black pepper and wood to keep your palate engaged from start to finish, though in the case of this 7 1/4 inch long cigar, that becomes a bit of an arduous journey for the taste buds. If nothing less, that extra inch or two simply doesn't deliver much in the way of added enjoyment. I’d still recommend giving the CAO Bones a try, though for my palate, the robusto vitola seems just the right amount of flavor.

An inky, near-black cigar with a bumpy cap. It produces a flaky white ash, as well as an earthy smoke whose sweet notes of toasted marshmallow, vanilla and clove take a minty turn before the mineral finish.

I’m in awe at the speed in which this cigar smoked. I also was shocked at how brittle the wrapper was. While the flavors were not unpleasant, the lack of depth and complexity really diminished the experience. If you like really subdued cigars, it’s worth a try.

CAO Bones cigars were released by General Cigar during August 2020. This cigar is made in Nicaragua with Nicaraguan, Honduran and Dominican filler tobaccos, a Connecticut Shade binder, and a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. These cigar are available in four sizes, each named after a classic game of dominoes. The Chicken Foot Robusto (5” x 54), priced at $7.49 per cigar, was sampled for this review. Boxes containing 20 cigars come with two standard 16mm dice, and are outfitted with a felt-covered inside lid which is a suitable surface for playing dice. For more information, please refer to General Cigar'spress release. The sample CAO Bones Robusto began with an earthy flavor along with just a very modest amount of pepper. After the first five minutes, the pepper was barely noticeable. After an additional five minutes, the cigar became much smoother as the body lightened up just a bit, but was still within the medium-to-full range. The flavor was enjoyable, but not very complex nor distinctive (which is not necessarily a bad thing). There's not really anything to dislike about this smoke, and the cigar does not have any obvious flaws. This is one of those sticks that is just simply good. The CAO Bones Robusto was well made and had a very easy draw, even burn, and held a long ash. No relights nor touch-ups were needed during the 45 minutes that it took me to smoke down to 1½ inches remaining. The cigar was smooth and pleasing, and not at all overpowering, making it a great choice for mainstream cigar smokers. I rate it with a favorable 4 points on a 5-point scale. More experienced cigar connoisseurs looking for a cigar with a bit more personality may prefer theCAO Pilon Robusto, which sells for the same price.

The CAO Bones Chicken Foot offered up the most interesting combination of flavors in the first third for me. The second and last thirds were consistent, but the flavors and balance didn't do enough to rise much above an average level. This cigar is a pass for me, I'd rather reach for the dynamic flavors of the Pilon or any of the Flathead series.
