Earth | Molasses | Nuttiness Quite dark and deeply-nuanced earthiness with big looks at vegetal notes within. Composted earth, topsoil, sweet grass, and alfalfa. CAO, owned by General Cigar, announced a new cigar last year in June, the CAO BX3. This new cigar falls in the same category of cigars like MX2, CX2, and LX2 with the letters representing the type of tobacco used in the blend and the number depicting the number of leaves used. In this case, BX3 refers to Brazilian tobacco times three. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The tobaccos used in the CAO BX3 come from the primary growing regions of Northeastern Brazil. The blend uses a Brazilian Mata Fina wrapper, Brazilian Arapiraca binder, and Brazilian, Nicaraguan, Mexican, and Honduran fillers. CAO BX3 is rolled at General’s factory in Nicaragua, STG Estelí and comes in three sizes: Robusto 5 x 52 $8.99, Toro 6 x 54 $9.49, and Gordo 6 x 60 $10.49. All come in 20 count boxes.

Given the abundance and use of a variety of Brazilian tobaccos in the blend, I wasn't quite sure just what to expect from the CAO BX3, but for the most part I am quite impressed. The one cigar with the draw and combustion issues certainly didn't help things, but the other two showed a number of impressive profiles and aromas, capped off by a layered and nuance final third of one cigar that seemed to finally show what every previous puff had been aiming for. If anything, there are a few too many puffs where it's not more obvious that this cigar is highlighting the profiles of Brazilian tobacco, but those puffs are still quite good in their own right. An overall enjoyable smoke with just enough moments of real brilliance to have me thinking of picking up a few more and seeing what the other vitolas offer.

With the CAO BX3, the brand really wanted to deliver a Brazilian tobacco smoke with some depth and complexity to it. However, while it proved to be a well-made cigar that burned clean and had a cool temperature, it turned into an overall average smoking experience. There were nice flavors of citrusy chocolate with oak and bitter espresso, but overall it was a one-dimensional smoke. It would be interesting if this were just a Brazilian puro (sans the added countries in the filler) to know what the other fillers were adding to the flavor. My thought is those other fillers are bringing a lot more to the table than the cigar lets on, despite taking a back seat in marketing.

The CAO BX3 Robusto started off fairly mellow, but by the second third, the fullness of flavors really ramped up. The enjoyment level was average throughout. The price point is attractive, but the overall experience doesn't really intrigue me enough to want to come back to this with any real frequency.
