CAO Nicaragua Matagalpa
Cigar Aficionado · Feb 1, 2019
There's a good draw and burn to this dark, oily cigar. It's earthy and oaky with touches of vanilla and spearmint that lead to a bold, leathery finish.

General Cigar released a new CAO at this year’s IPCPR show, CAO Nicaragua. The cigar gets its name from the fillers in the cigar that all come from Nicaragua, specifically Condega, Estelí and Jalapa. The wrapper comes from Honduras in the Jamastran Valley the binder comes from there as well. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. CAO Nicaragua comes in three sizes, all named after Nicaraguan cities: Tipitapa (4 7/8 x 50) — $6.79, Matagalpa (5 5/8 x 46) — $6.59, Granada (6 x 50) — $6.99. All come in boxes of 20 cigars. The cigar shipped right after the IPCPR in August.

This cigar’s construction is textbook and the draw, for me personally, was near ideal. Also consistent is the CAO Nicaragua’s flavors, but as you can see, lacks complexity. The notes that do get introduced fade quickly and can be very hard to detect. The intensity of the smoke, while not vanishing entirely, does dissipate. I’m concerned about the aging potential of this cigar as it may become muddled over time in a humidor. That being said, for the price, this cigar is a decent value.

I really enjoyed the Balmoral Serie Signaturas Dueto Gran Toro and it was great to see Royal Agio team up with E.P. Carrillo. While this may not come across as a "special" or "rare" cigar, it is something different and fun, and is a cigar I would smoke quite frequently if possible. Definitely worth smoking.
