CAO Cigars Session Garage
Kaplowitz · Apr 11, 2023
Milk chocolate | Cinnamon | Red soil This, not that. Spicy, not peppery. Bold, not brash. Uncluttered, not simple. Hot cocoa, cinnamon. Distinct diner Joe. Back-end maraschino. Hot Rod, not Macho Man.

There's a stark contrast between the white ash of this cigar and the dark wrapper. It's a sweet and spicy smoke that shows elements of red pepper and leather along with hints of chocolate, raisins and vanilla.

The CAO Session was inspired by how many times CAO Master Blender Rick Rodriguez has smoking sessions in his garage. He worked closely with his friend Yuri Guillen to create what they thought would be an ideal cigar for any cigar smoker. CAO Session is described as medium-bodied. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend uses a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Dominican binder, and filler from Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. CAO Session comes in three sizes: Shop 6 X 60, Bar 6 X 49, and Garage 5.25 X 54. This is the first CAO cigar to be made in the Dominican Republic.

At the 2019 IPCPR Trade Show, General Cigar introduced a new regular production line under its CAO brand known as the CAO Session. The CAO Session is a cigar developed by CAO Master Blender Rick Rodriguez. Rodriguez got the inspiration from smoking cigars in his own “man cave” (his garage) and decided to blend a […] Key flavors: Earth, Brown Sugar, Tangy Citrus, Red Pepper, Molasses.

The inspiration for this cigar is a beautiful narrative of how new cigars come into our midst. The hard work and careful construction to make a cigar is a process with many levels of contribution. Rodriguez, as with many of his projects, seeks to truly bring something unique and different, enlisting the aid of others to bring the story of Session to life. The downside? In this reviewer’s opinion, it’s incomplete. There were genuine puffs of excellence throughout this cigar, but the flavors never sustained for any length of time in a consistent manner.

CAO Session cigars hit the market in July 2019. These cigars are made with a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Dominican binder, and a blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. They are available in three sizes including a Robusto named “Garage”, which was sampled for this review. Garage measures 5.25 x 55 and is priced at $8.59 per single stick. For more information about these cigars, please check out thepress release. The sample CAO Session cigar started off with a sweet peppery flavor. The pepper quickly faded after a few puffs, but the sweetness continued along with some nutty and woodsy flavors that were complimented by pleasant notes of spice. The cigar was at the upper end of the medium bodied range, and might even be considered medium-to-full by some smokers. Not a cigar for beginners, but mainstream cigar smokers to experienced connoisseurs should enjoy this smoke. It took me an hour to smoke the Garage down to two inches remaining. During that time, a touch-up and one relight were needed. For the most part, the cigar had a semi-even burn, good draw, and held a medium-to-long ash. As it says on the secondary band, CAO Session is a cigar that's best enjoyed if you just “Sit Smoke Chill” . No thinking required, just relax and enjoy. Of course, this can also be said for many other cigars, especially those that are not overly complex nor too bold. I enjoyed my entire smoking session with the CAO Session cigar, and rate it with a very good 4 points on a 5-point scale. The flavors held up all the way down to the very last puff. No worries about having to end a smoking session prematurely due to a drop-off in flavor. See All New Cigars for 2019 From General Cigar

The CAO Session Garage started with a nice profile and very low strength. The retrohale is a nice bright spot for this cigar. Having smoked this blend a few times after initial release, I wasn't too high on it, but it has improved over time. I would actually recommend people giving this a try and I would smoke this on occasion as the flavor profile it provides with the low strength level does have some appeal.
