Usually, cigar brand owners go to Ernesto Perez-Carrillo to make their cigars. If they’re lucky, he says yes. In this case, Perez-Carrillo went to Oliva Cigar Co. to make Allegiance, which is the fourth line in the Perez-Carrillo series—and the series has been nothing less than stellar. La Historia (which was Part I in the series) has made it to the Top 25 list on more than one occasion. Encore (Part II) was named Cigar of the Year in 2018. Pledge (Part III) was named Cigar of the Year in 2020. And now, Part IV has landed the No. 5 spot. The bands across the series are all the same pattern and design for continuity, but the colors are different in order to distinguish one blend from another. The green band of Allegiance is meant to symbolize nature and tobacco. Other than the Ecuador Sumatra wrapper, the tobacco in this cigar is all Nicaraguan. So, does this taste more like an Oliva cigar or an E.P. Carrillo cigar? We haven’t decided. What we do know is that it comes together brilliantly setting a sweet-and-spicy tone with a woody undercurrent, snappy bursts of gingerbread and charming accents of nutmeg and cinnamon before the peppery finish.

E.P. Carrillo Cigar Co.’s fourth line in the Perez-Carrillo Series, Allegiance, was announced just before PCA back in 2022, but didn’t start shipping until November of that year. Allegiance joins La Historia, Encore, and Pledge in the series. E.P. Carrillo Allegiance is a Carrillo branded cigar, but is being rolled in Nicaragua by Oliva Cigar Co. Allegiance was blended by Ernesto Perez Carrillo using Oliva’s tobacco and and is only the second cigar to be produced outside of Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic for the company. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The Allegiance blend uses a Sumatra -seed wrapper, with Nicaraguan binder and fillers. There are four sizes: Sidekick (a robusto measuring 5×50, $12), Confidant (a 6×52 toro, $13.10), Wingman (6 7/8×54, $13.50) and a larger cigar called Chaperone (6 1/4×58, which retails for $14). These come packed in boxes of 20. Production was limited in this initial run to 7,500 boxes of cigars, but the company has not ruled out making more based on demand. Two thirds of those boxes were sent to the U.S.

La Alianza, the Ernesto Perez-Carrillo -led factory, is known as one of the cigar world’s most esteemed manufacturing facilities, but for this release, EPC enlisted Oliva’s TABOLISA factory to produce their latest release, the EPC Allegiance. The blend consistently produces a beautifully balanced, medium-bodied smoke.

This E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Sidekick didn't quite do it for me. While the interplay of spice and roasted nuts gave it's best look within the second third, for the most part, the profile weighed too heavy on spice. For me, a flavor profile needs more than that to layer into the fold. It's a good baseline of flavors, just needs to build on it.
