An exceptionally fat cigar with a sweet-and-spicy character. Notes of maple syrup and French toast are balanced by spicy bursts of wasabi and horseradish. The draw is a touch firm, but the burn is dead-even.

E.P. Carrillo INCH Ringmaster 5 3/8

The size of the E.P. Carrillo INCH Ringmaster 5 3/8 is still too large to fit comfortably in my mouth and the strength is still firmly in the medium range, but those are pretty much the only major things that remain the same between the samples I smoked 27 months ago and the aged version. During that aforementioned time period the profile of the cigar has changed completely: what once was a blend full of a fairly linear combination of sweetness and sourdough bread flavors is now significantly more complex, with creamy cashews dominating the palate and a distinct wasabi flavor taking the top spot on the finish. In the end, this is a great example of how aging can completely change a cigar for the better in any number of ways.

I’m reviewing E.P. Carrillo Inch in the No. 60, a chunky 5.875 x 60 format. E.P. Carrillo is named for brand founder and celebrated cigarmaker Ernesto Perez-Carrillo. He is best known as the man behind La Gloria Cubana. Perez-Carrillo pioneered a number of big ring gauge cigars when he launched La Gloria Cubana Serie R during the Cigar Boom of the 1990s. He found much success with La Gloria prior to selling the brand to tobacco giant Swedish Match in 1999. La Gloria Cubana was folded into the portfolio of General Cigar Company alongside other name brands, including Macanudo and Cohiba.

The E.P. Carrillo INCH Natural No. 60 had a flavor profile that was pretty linear with just a few changes. It was definitely a heavy oak and earth influence. I'd prefer a bit more to the flavor profile, but for those that are fans of the flavors I've described, you'll get a full dose of them here and find something you enjoy. The cigar is a very slow smoker, so there is some value there.
