Highclere Castle Victorian Toro

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2021

If you won’t admit to having watched the period drama “Downton Abbey,” then at least fess up to sitting through an episode or two with your significant other. Highclere Castle serves as the setting for the PBS television series, and the estate is owned by George Carnarvon, the eighth Earl of Carnarvon, who commissioned Foundation Cigar Co. to create a cigar named after his breathtaking English country home. All Highclere Castle cigars are made by A.J. Fernandez. The Victorian is a darker, stronger sequel to the original, and the Toro size, with its dignified espresso character and regal hints of caramel, black pepper and graham cracker, proves itself to be a cigar fit for a lord.

Highclere Castle Petite Corona by Foundation Cigars

Simply Stogies · Sep 11, 2023

When one hears the words, Highclere Castle, the first things they do not think of are cigars. If they do happen to know what Highclere Castle is, the first thing that comes to mind is the television show, Downton Abbey, which uses Highclere Castle as its primary setting. Highclere Castle does have a long history...

Highclere Castle Victorian

Cigar Snob · Jan 6, 2020

The manufacturing expertise of AJ Fernandez, the blending of Nicholas Melillo, and the historical heft of Highclere castle, one of the most significant Victorian mansions in Eng-land (and fictional titular home from Downton Abbey), make for a special cigar with a powerful blend that we wouldn’t have expected given the old-world castle connection.

Highclere Castle Victorian Toro

Halfwheel · Oct 5, 2019 · August 2019

As we've noted before, the reviewer doesn't know what the score will be when submitting a review, but my guess is that this will be pretty high and it will be well-deserved. First and foremost, this is not what I was expecting from what had been dubbed the maduro version of the Highclere Castle; rather, it is the best flavors of that cigar amped up and served up with fantastic balance and impressive complexity. What it lacks—if you want to use that word—in traditional maduro sweetness, it more than makes up for in nearly perfect habano flavors, with the Brazilian mata fina binder contributing just the right amount of accent flavors and the Nicaraguan filler providing a fantastic base off of which to build. The construction is also nearly flawless, making for a truly special cigar. Highly recommended for those looking for a cigar with a big, pronounced flavor that seemingly never hits an off-note.

Foundation Highclere Castle Toro

Blind Man's Puff · Nov 6, 2017 · July 2017

The Highclere Castle Cigar was announced just before IPCPR 2017. It is made in Estelí, Nicaragua at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez, using a Connecticut Shade wrapper, and both Criollo and Corojo from the volcanic soils of Jalapa and the island of Ometepe. The binder a Brazilian Mata Fina. The blend is finished with an exclusive hybrid seed the company has named Nicadán. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The first release is limited and were available in select cigar lounges and tobacco shops across the United States by September 1, 2017, followed by availability at Highclere Castle and internationally. Sizes to include Churchill, Toro, Petit Corona, Robusto, and Corona. Highclere’s rich history starts in 1862, when cigars were first acquainted with England. The convention at Highclere Castle has been to resign to the library after supper for a cigar and whiskey. In 1922, the present Earl’s great-grandfather celebrated his and Howard Carter’s revelation of King Tut’s Tomb with a good cigar smoke. As of late, Highclere Castle ‘s historian found letters and individual record records of the Carnarvon’s cigar purchases in the mid 1900s from merchants in London and also the Ritz Hotel. Melillo, in this way, made a cigar that mirrors that noteworthy flavor profile and smoking style. Highclere Castle is a 5,000 acre estate in Hampshire, England and has been the nation seat of the Earl of Carnarvon since 1679. One of the world’s most popular homes, it rose to worldwide notoriety as the primary recording area for the wildly successful TV show, Downton Abbey. The 5th Earl supported and went with prehistorian Howard Carter for the revelation of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 and Highclere at present has an instructive historical center display for the discovery. Highclere Castle has more than 110,000 guests every year. The present Countess of Carnarvon has composed two New York Times best silling books including Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey, and in March 2017 distributed At Home: Entertaining at the Real Downton Abbey.

Highclere Castle Toro

Cigar Dojo · Apr 27, 2018

Newcomer Highclere Castle Cigar Co. has found a worthy partner in Nicholas Melillo, one of today's most respected/creative blenders. For the company's freshman release, Nick has chosen a Nicaraguan blend, bound in Brazilian Mata Fina (an ingredient he is quite familiar with) and wrapped in a Connecticut Shade leaf. The cigars look as regal as you'd expect, and the construction is exemplary of the burgeoning Fernández factory. However, the cigar didn't quite amount to the noble climax anticipated, considering the cigar's backstory and luxurious price point. Overall, the Highclere Castle shows enjoyable flavors and no sign of undesirable aspects, only lacking the elusive "it factor" component.

Developing Palates · Nov 29, 2017 · October 2017

If cigars tasted this good in the early 1900s, then sign me up. Don't let the light wrapper fool you, the Highclere Castle Toro has plenty of depth and body to enjoy on a stand alone basis and paired with a nice spirit. A luxurious look paired with a luxurious taste. I need a Rolls Royce to smoke this cigar in.
