Gran Habano S.T.K. Black Dahlia Robusto

Gran Habano announced the Black Dahlia last May and is described as full-bodied. The blend uses a Nicaraguan shade grown corojo wrapper and two Nicaraguan habano binders. The filler uses Nicaraguan cubita and habano, Colombian and Costa Rican tobacco. Today we are reviewing Gran Habano S.T.K. Black Dahlia Robusto. The S.T.K. Black Dahlia is a regular production cigar coming in three vitolas: Corona Gorda (5 5/8 x 46) — $9.50 (Boxes of 20, $190), Gran Robusto (6 x 54) — $10 (Boxes of 20, $200), Robusto (5 x 52) — $9 (Boxes of 20, $180) Each box comes with Boveda humidity pack and are rolled at George Rico ‘s GR Tabaqueras Unidas factory in Honduras. S.T.K. stands for “Stay True Kid” and has been used in several other of the company’s cigars. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience.

One of the things I have found about the S.T.K. collection as opposed to the regular Gran Habano portfolio is that it is a touch more refined, balanced and nuanced, and that seems to be the case again here. This isn’t a cigar where the flavors will come out kicking and screaming, but rather flow with grace and near elegance, touching complexity that is almost orchestral in that while some flavors can be easily identified, others blend in so tightly that it’s like trying to pull out the violas from the violins in a string quartet. I’m hesitant to peg this as a morning cigar, or any time of day for that matter; while it’s perfectly enjoyable no matter what you’re doing, this is a cigar that is best smoked when you have the time and focus to give it, making it the primary holder of your attention. Do that, and what gets glossed over will shine, and you’ll find that the Black Dahlia offers an impressive depth and balance that shows the refinement that George Rico is able to offer.

Like viewing a fine art film, where it has been particularly challenging to watch, but suddenly the denouement gives you a redeeming payoff—not only tying all those loose ends together, but giving the individual threads themselves newfound value—this cigar finishes on a final, triumpant “Eureka!” moment. It's that unexpected feeling of wanting to go back and watch (smoke) it again, now that you know what’s actually happening... Gran Habano's S.T.K. Black Dahlia may have stumbled out of the gate, but it finished so strong that all was, not just forgiven, but appreciated.
