Last April, Altadis U.S.A. announced a new H. Upmann that was shown off at that years Tobacco Plus Expo (TPE) tradeshow. The H. Upmann 1844 Classic is described as a “next-level shade.” They say this means a medium-bodied cigar blended with an Ecuadorian Connecticut shade wrapper and Honduran binder and fillers. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. H. Upmann 1844 Classic is produced at La Flor de Copan in Honduras and was blended by Grupo de Maestros. The Classic joins the other H.Upmann’s in the 1844 line including: H. Upmann 1844 Vintage Cameroon, 1844 Reserve, and the 1844 Añejo, H. Upmann 1844 Classic is presented in 25 count boxes that reflect the heritage of the brand and the champagne-colored cigar bands. It comes in four sizes: Corona (44 x 5) – $7.10; Robusto (52 x 5) – $7.40; Toro (54 x 6) – $7.70; and Churchill (50 x 7) – $8.00.

At this years Tobacco Plus Expo, Altadis U.S.A. was showcasing their latest extension to the H. Upmann line. Known as H. Upmann 1844 Classic Connecticut it is produced at La Flor de Copan in Honduras under the watchful eyes of Grupo de Maestros. This is the 4th extension to the H. Upmann 1844 heritage portfolio. A solidly rolled robusto with a light wrapper and round cap. The creamy smoke is full of lemon, honey, pecan and a touch of cedar before a finish that smacks of honeyed wood. It burns and draws evenly, producing a sturdy ash.

From the get-go, the H. Upmann Classic Robusto delivers a solid and very enjoyable profile that strikes the balance between milder strength and fuller flavor. There is plenty of pepper in the profile, while a lighter and sweeter creaminess keeps things easy on the palate. It then adds in some light woods for accents, while its profile transitions from smooth and easy into something that has a bit more character and robustness without completely abandoning its roots. Top it off with very good if not near perfect construction, and you have a very impressive cigar to consider. While the profile might not have the complexity to push it to the next level, there is little wrong with what it does offer. If there's one thing I can say about the H. Upmann 1844 Classic Robusto is that it's a cigar that I could smoke seemingly any time of day, in any mood and in any situation, as well as one that I'd feel confident giving to pretty much anyone wanting a cigar.
