Whenever I light up a cigar, I expect that I'll like it, though readily accept that to what degree will vary and occasionally, I will simply not like a cigar. Then there are cigars like the H. Upmann Hispaniola by Jose Mendez Belicoso, which might not reach the elite level of premium cigars but deliver a much better smoking experience than the average cigar. Particularly, the H. Upmann draws from a number of spots on the flavor wheel—sweetness, creaminess, earth, pepper and wood—and brings them together nearly impeccably, capped off with top-notch construction and an almost perfect draw. While this ranks as one of the better cigars I have smoked this year, more importantly, it may end up being the one that outperformed its expectations more than any other I have smoked, making it an easy cigar to recommend picking up and smoking at your earliest opportunity.

The past couple of years, the H. Upmann brand has been one of the busier ones in the Altadis U.S.A. portfolio. 2019 marked a very significant milestone as the brand celebrated its 175th anniversary. While the H. Upmann 175th Anniversary limited release was one of the more significant ones, there have been several other regular production […] Key flavors: Smoky Notes, Sweet Earth, Natural Tobacco, White Pepper, Cream.

Altadis U.S.A. announced two new H. Upmann lines before IPCPR 2019 Hispaniola by Jose Mendez and the 175th Anniversary. H. Upmann Hispaniola by Jose Mendez is a partnership between Upmann and Jose Mendez who grew the tobacco used in the blend. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Hispaniola is the name of the Dominican Republic and Haiti given by Christopher Columbus when he landed on the island in 1492. The name Hispanola pays tribute to the island and uses tobaccos in the blend from the Dominican Republic such as Olor, Pilotico and Andullo tobacco. The pilotico and andullo were developed exclusively for Altadis by the Mendez family, the largest tobacco grower in the island. Andullo tobacco originally comes from the Dominican Republic and is not often used in premium cigars. The H. Upmann Hispaniola is described as full-flavored and medium to full bodied. The blend uses an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper with Dominican binder and fillers, including andullo tobacco. It comes in boxes of 20 in three different vitolas: Robusto, (50 x 5): $8.50, Toro (52 x 6 1/8): $8.95, Belicoso (50 x 6): $8.80. The cigars are rolled at Tabacalera de García in the Dominican Republic.

A strikingly oily pirámide that draws and burns evenly. Notes of cashew, spice and toast fall a bit flat before the dry finish.

I like this H. Upmann Hispaniola by Jose Mendez Toro release for H. Upmann and Altadis. I loved the flavor profile that the tobacco in the cigar produced and it is definitely a cigar that many should try. It may not be for everyone, but it is worth trying out and seeing how the different types of tobacco smoke, especially the Dominican tobaccos.
