H. Upmann Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez
Cigar Snob · Jan 6, 2023
The H. Upmann Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez was launched in 2017 to robust sales and rave reviews. This publication assessed the blend at 93 points in the Sept/Oct 2017 issue; it seemed destined to land a top spot in the following end of year list. Shockingly, it didn’t perform well enough to make the list after the rigorous top 25 round of tastings. The characteristics that gave it such a high score during the year were simply not there in the second tasting. The panel continued tasting the blend

This toro’s bright, lively notes of spice and dried fruit are supported by hearty underpinnings of hickory and nuts. Hints of dried cherry, coconut and leather emerge on the finish. The draw and burn remain even throughout.

Over the past few years, AJ Fernandez has been certainly making his mark on putting his own impression of several legacy brands that have originated in Cuba. We’ve seen this with brands such as Punch, Hoyo de Monterrey, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Gispert, Trinidad, and H. Upmann. The first release for the H. Upmann brand […] Key flavors: Baker’s Spice, Natural Tobacco, Citrus, Chocolate, Pepper.

H. Upmann AJ Fernandez Toro presents a big-brand cigar worthy of the boutique crowd’s attention. It seems that anything AJ touches turns to gold, and it’s wise for Altadis to leverage this. Overall, we wind up with a surprisingly complex, extremely smooth, very flavorful, medium-bodied cigar at a great price. The construction was stellar, with the only imperfection being an ever-so-slightly open draw—which could potentially be remedied by using a punch or V-cut, rather the usual double-guillotine.

Nicaragua I A black pepper blast rides primary tandem with a chocolate cake made cake-like via a yeasty tobacco note pushing upward from high-middlings. All this is held up by a plank a' cedar over honey malt sweetened earth. A few puffs later on, and the cedar plank is being hoisted and itself braced by coffee bean, then poured espresso, then caramel latte bounding up from said earthiness. Pepper maybe not dials-back, but blends into the profile from top-down. Leather starts in the under-belly and works up through the profile. A nifty cream swirls hither and thither. Grains darkly flow into middlings with their own molasses attachment. Medium, robustly-so outta the gate. Seems bound for Medium-full. Not much strength as of yet, keeps me to "medium." Body is medium full, flavors hit that robust medium on-the-nose. Said body is a growing cream and leathery oils. Finish is a spiced sweetness of long cedar legg'd goodness. Thus far the AJF Upmann shows a hallmark of upper echelon Fernandez

A lot of times with 60 ring gauge cigars I find that I like the flavor, sometimes more than smaller ring gauges, but don’t care for the size. In this case, while the flavors were still good, I’m not sure that this is any better than the regular H Upmann by AJ Fernandez. I should remind you: this isn’t the same blend, so it’s not an apples to apples comparison. But in this case, I think the size works against the cigar in two different ways. First, there’s the large size, which I find annoying. Second, the profile is rather dry. This gets compounded by the fact that this cigar took so long for me to smoke. It didn't affect the score, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't have been wanting to taste this profile in something shorter.

As the weeks warm up, I’m in search of more great golf ‘gars to smoke on the course, and today I’m smoking an H. Upmann AJ Fernandez in a 6 by 54 Toro to see if it passes my litmus test for taste, quality, and price before I add a box to my collection. My pals know I’m obsessed with golf, and they love playing with me because I’m tough to beat, and I always bring plenty of cigars to smoke. Good golf ‘gars have to meet specific criteria, though. They can’t be too expensive, yet they need to taste amazing because a bad cigar can ruin your concentration.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews

For fans of AJ, this is a no brainier to try. For others, still worth a try to taste the new spin on an old traditional Cuban brand.
