Hoyo La Amistad Silver by AJ Fernandez -

Kaplowitz · Dec 6, 2017

Combustion/construction of this Hoyo La Amistad are each flawless but for, OK, a flaw... draw is a tick-tight on the onset, settles to medium+ tension. Flavors begin and end medium-full, balanced on a tight-rope spanning two skyscrapers. Pepper-spice has a salted sour astringent/acidic attachment. Backbone bitters-some, but don't quite bite. Lettuce say medium-bodied -- a talc consistency. Rich, thinly. Sharply at times, even throaty. Strength registers medium-full in the head, with light upper-

Hoyo La Amistad by AJ Fernandez Robusto

Blind Man's Puff · Aug 30, 2017 · July 2016

Last year, General Cigar announced a collaboration with A.J. Fernandez to create the Hoyo La Amistad. These cigars are made at Tabacalera A.J. Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua and is comprised of a dark, Ecuadoran Habano wrapper and a combination of Nicaraguan tobaccos from Estelí, Condega and Jalapa. It’s a fresh take of Hoyo de Monterrey through the eyes and mind of Fernandez. La Amistad translates to “friendship” in Spanish. Today we are reviewing the Hoyo La Amistad by AJ Fernandez Robusto. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. La Amistad released at the beginning of September 2016 and comes in four vitolas and boxes of 20: Rothschild 4 1/2 x 50 — $6.49, Robusto 5 x 54 — $7.59, 6 x 50 — $7.79, Gigante 6 x 60 — $7.99.

Hoyo La Amistad Robusto

Halfwheel · Nov 15, 2016 · September 2016

The cold draw and the first third of the Hoyo La Amistad certainly showed quite a bit of potential. While the pepper was quite strong, the remainder of the profile had some great complexity that really wanted to shine. Unfortunately at some point in the second third it seems to fall apart and gets increasingly bitter as you continue through the cigar. Construction was a slight issue too—definitely not the worst, but there were a couple of touch-ups and enough flaky ash that I would put it in the annoyance column. There is the potential that some time and rest could take care of the stronger pepper note and perhaps a bit of the harshness, but that will remain to be seen. As it is, I don’t think it’s a bad cigar, and as mentioned it certainly shows potential, so I’ll be interested to try some of the other sizes. In the meantime though, my recommendation if you’re going in trying the robusto, just grab one or two first and see if your experience is better than mine.

Hoyo La Amistad

CigarCzars · Nov 16, 2019

Hoyo La Amistad cigars were blended by boutique cigar maker A.J. Fernandez for General Cigar, and released in September 2016. The cigars are made with a blend of filler and binder tobaccos from four growing regions in Nicaragua, along with Ecuadorian Habano wrappers. Hoyo La Amistad cigars are available in four sizes, including a Robusto (5 x 54) that is priced at $7.59 per stick. For more information about these cigars, please see thepress release. The Hoyo La Amistad Robusto began with a peppery taste, which transformed into a leathery flavor with hints of spice after about five minutes. The body was medium-to-full, and not as full nor as potent as AJ's other collaboration with General Cigar, namely theFoundry Time Flies Cigar. Both of these cigars were enjoyable, but the Hoyo was less formidable and the Foundry had a deeper and richer flavor, at least in my opinion. The Hoyo La Amistad Robusto had a very good draw, held a long ash, and had an even burn. No relights nor touch-ups were needed during the 40 minutes that it took me to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining. I rate it with a very good 4 points on a 5-point scale. This cigar should appeal to mainstream cigar smokers as well as those who are more experienced, while the Foundry cigar is recommended for more experienced smokers.

Developing Palates · Dec 7, 2016 · July 2016

AJ never makes a bad cigar in his vast portfolio, and this cigar is another shining example of such. I can see many enjoying this cigar with its straight forward and linear approach in flavors.
