This was a very enjoyable cigar to smoke. The flavors work together very well, and the transitions (aside from the final one) are fluid. As mentioned earlier, I have smoked quite a few of these cigars, and I prefer the corona gorda. Each size makes for an enjoyable smoking experience, however, and I would not hesitate to smoke any one of them. Having been able to smoke most of the cigars released by HVC, I was expecting greatness when I picked them up. These cigars deliver well above their price point, and will surely help to cement the legacy that Reinier Lorenzo is making for himself and his brand within the industry.

HVC came out with a new regular production line last summer: Hot Cake. The cigar is a sequel of sorts to their 2016 release Pan Caliente which is Spanish for Hot Cake. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. HVC Hot Cake is made at Aganorsa Leaf’s TABSA factory in Esteli Nicaragua like all other HVC cigars. The blend uses a Mexican San Andres wrapper, Jalapa Corojo 99 binder, and fillers including Esteli Corojo 98 and 3 different varieties of a newer tobacco called Corojo 2006 Maduro. The Corojo 2006 Maduro uses viso priming form that plant which HVC President/Founder/Blender Reinier Lorenzo says “gives it a super rich flavor with a ton of sweetness.” He also notes that the uniqueness in the flavor of this blend comes from the Jalapa Corojo 99 and Esteli Corojo 98 both grown from Aganorsa Farms. HVC Hot Cake launched in three sizes Corona Gorda (46 x 5 5/8) $7.40, Laguito #5 (54 x 6) $9.00, and Laguito #4 (52 x 4 ½) $8.00. Earlier this year the company launched a 60 ring gauge version, Gran Cañon.

HVC Hot Cake Gran Cañon

Smooth and balanced, the HVC Hot Cake Gran Cañon has quite a bit going for it. After smoking three samples, I could easily name it as one of the most consistent blends I have smoked in a long time, as all three were virtually the same profile-wise. In some ways this is a good thing—since you will know almost exactly what you are going to get when you sit down to smoke one—but on the other hand, there is very little deviation for those looking for transitions. In addition, the profile does get noticeably linear in the final third, a fact that is not helped by the combination of length and large ring gauge. In the end, the Gran Cañon may be far from HVC’s best release, but it is easily enjoyable enough to add to my list of releases to smoke when I want a 60 ring gauge cigar, and it is easily good enough for me to encourage fans of the vitola to try for themselves.

HVC Hot Cake Fresh Out of the Oven Broadleaf Torpedo

This HVC Hot Cake Fresh Out of the Oven Broadleaf Torpedo is a pretty good representation of broadleaf. I wouldn't put it tier one though, because at times the profile is harsh and edgy. But perhaps some more humidor time will be helpful, and in turn will turn it into a solid good cigar all the way through the smoking time.
