Kristoff Tres Compadres Toro

Halfwheel · Dec 10, 2023 · September 2023

Among all the cigars that I have smoked and reviewed, I can’t think of a time where I have described a cigar as tasting like a good friendship, and while it might be the backstory of the Kristoff Tres Compadres Toro planting a seed in my mind, that’s what this cigar reminds me of. It starts off on a familiar note, just like a chat with good friends would, then after the pleasantries, turns into a bit more serious conversation, but with few rough spots, hostility, or confrontation. That’s not to say it’s perfectly smooth, as my notes about the final third show that it can get a bit out of balance at times and dominated by a building char and burnt flavor on what had otherwise been very enjoyable components. That said, when this cigar is at its best, it is a wonderfully enjoyable cigar that pays fitting tribute to the men whose passing inspired its creation.

Kristoff Tres Compadres Robusto Robusto

Cigar Aficionado · Apr 1, 2024

Tangy at first, with a lemon peel and pine needle zestiness. The smoke gains intensity showing bolder notes of arabica coffee and red pepper spice. A sweet snap of gingerbread cookie appears on the finish. It burns evenly with an inconsistent draw.

Kristoff Tres Compadres Toro

Cigar Dojo · Aug 1, 2024

The Kristoff Tres Compadres cigar honors the friendship of Glen Case, Rolando Villamil, and Chuck Finch, with their initials on the band. This Nicaraguan puro, introduced at the 2023 PCA trade show, uses tobacco from Condega, Jalapa, and Estelí, being a unique departure for the company. In the Toro size, the cigar features a slightly oily wrapper with a warm bread and dried pine wood aroma. The initial flavors include woody cinnamon and tangy bread, but also introduce an unexpected raw peanut bitterness. As the cigar progresses, it shifts to sweeter notes, though the burn is uneven, requiring touch-ups. Unfortunately, the flavor stagnates midway, with toasted bread and woodiness dominating. By the final third, the sweetness fades, leaving a profile of charred wood, burnt toast, and black pepper, ending with a charred, peppery finish that lacks complexity.
