This fall, an exclusive new La Aroma de Cuba cigar, called Habano Reserve, began arriving at select retailers nationwide. Award-winning father-and-son cigarmakers Pepin and Jaime Garcia blend and produce this limited, annual release in a single size, a 6-by-52 Monarch, which I’m firing up for today’s review. The La Aroma de Cuba brand is owned by the Levin family, the proprietors of Ashton and San Cristobal cigars. La Aroma de Cuba cigars are handcrafted in Estelí, Nicaragua, by the Garcia family, who also produce San Cristobal, as well as their esteemed My Father brand.

La Aroma De Cuba Edicion Especial No 1 Toro

In early 2020, Ashton released a new version of La Aroma de Cuba Edición Especial, repackaged and reblended to be a bit stronger than the original cigars. One of the biggest changes is in the wrapper. It’s still Ecuador Havana, but the new wrappers come from higher primings, meaning they grow on a higher position of the tobacco plant. Because of the increased sun exposure, high-priming tobacco tends to be stronger than leaves that grow lower on the stalk. This corona gorda size reflects the concentrated qualities of the new blend, with intense woody, hickory notes that play off a vanilla sweetness for a long, reverberating finish. It’s made for Ashton Distributors Inc. by the Garcia Family of My Father Cigars.

La Aroma de Cuba Habano Reserve Monarch

The La Aroma de Cuba Habano Reserve Monarch does an impressive job in its first half, offering enough of the familiar habano flavors of wood and pepper to live up to its name, while also not settling for a typical habano profile. It does that by a near-constant series of adjustments, adding and subtracting flavors and turning their intensities up and down. The second half of the cigar isn't as dynamic, finding a lane fairly early on, hitting cruise control, and taking the cigar to its conclusion, with only a bit of char added. It's a cigar that sits on the line between good and great, and certainly one I'd smoke again; I'd just love to give the first half a better follow-up than the one it's currently getting.

This La Aroma de Cuba Habano Reserve Monarch was a unique smoke with its funky barnyard and umami and it was fun to smoke. The cigar fairs on the less spice and strength, which seems right based on my recollection (regardless when it was made at Fuente or by Pepin). I'd recommend to give it a shot for its fun and unique factors.
