In 1994, Litto Gomez and Ines Lorenzo-Gomez opened a cigar factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic. It was a new venture for them, and their first cigars were very mild. Three decades after, the couple is still in the cigar business, and they have built a reputation for making full-bodied blends. The company grows its own tobacco, hearty Dominican leaf strengthened and tested by the dry, hot and windy climate of La Canela. That powerful tobacco is an ingredient in this chisel-shaped figurado, along with some aged binder leaf from Cotuí, Dominican Republic, and a wrapper of Ecuadoran Sumatra. The result is rich, opulent smoke layered in leather, coffee and coconut, with some clove that scents the long finish.

La Flor Dominicana is celebrating 30 years in the cigar industry with the release of the LFD 30 Years commemorative cigar. Founded by Litto and Ines Gomez in 1994, La Flor Dominicana has become renowned for producing some of the most powerful cigars available. This limited-edition cigar honors their journey from their initial mild blends under the Los Libertadores brand to their current bold offerings. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The LFD 30 Years cigar is presented in La Flor’s iconic Chisel shape, a 6 1/2 x 58 box-pressed figurado with unique tapers. The blend features a dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, an aged binder from Cotuí in the Dominican Republic, and fillers from La Flor’s farm in La Canela. Described as “rich and decadent, with a depth of dark flavors, spice, and body,” this cigar is expected to deliver the robust profile that La Flor Dominicana is known for. Each cigar is housed in a special humidor crafted at La Flor Dominicana ‘s box factory in the Dominican Republic. Limited to only 2,000 humidors, each containing 60 cigars, this release is set to be a collector’s item. The humidors were showcased at the 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show in Las Vegas.

Over the years, I have found that La Flor Dominicana cigars tend to gravitate towards the stronger end of the spectrum, so I was interested to see where the La Flor Dominicana 30th Anniversary ended up. It turns out I had no need to worry, because this blend is a study in balance: the main flavors of creamy cedar, charred meat, sourdough bread and pecans are distinct but never cloying, the spice and pepper are obvious but never overly aggressive, and the medium-full strength is noticeable but never overwhelming. In fact, other than a metallic bitterness that showed up in the second third of the second cigar—which I consider to be an aberration—the La Flor Dominicana 30th Anniversary is an extremely approachable and enjoyable blend, and while it is absolutely ready to smoke now, I am also looking forward to seeing how it changes after it has some age on it.

This La Flor Dominicana 30 Years was a really nice LFD. Probably the best I have had in a long time. When they put the time and tobacco into a blend, they do great things. They show so many wonderful qualities of Dominican tobacco, and some great body and strength with those flavors. It was not an overly complex cigar, but just good. I think it will age great. Really a nice experience and uplifting following current reviews.
