Litto Gomez is a creative cigarmaker, and perhaps his greatest innovation is coming up with the Chisel shape in 2003. The flattened figurado has a head that looks like a handtool or the mouthpiece of a woodwind instrument. Its latest incarnation—fall of 2010—is our No. 10 cigar of 2010, the La Flor Dominicana Air Bender Chisel. It lives up to the reputation for power and full flavor that previous Chisels share. Made from a blend of Gomez's homegrown Dominican filler and binder tobaccos, including some piloto Cubano, Sumatra seed and Corojo, the smoke is finished with Habano-seed wrapper leaf grown in Ecuador. Gomez used a leaf of ligero from a higher priming for the wrapper on this cigar, giving it a darker hue and more strength than his other La Flor Dominicana Air Benders. Bold from the very first puff, the cigar is strong and meaty, full of spice and coffee notes, with a finish reminiscent of a whiskey barrel. Gomez's cigars are renowned for power and spice, and the La Flor Dominicana Air Bender Chisel is no exception.

La Flor Dominicana Air Bender Maduro Chisel

After appearing in a limited edition humidor and then as a TAA exclusive for retail members, the La Flor Dominicana ‘s Air Bender Maduro became as a regular production item in July of 2015. A notable change in the wrapper from Brazilian to an Ecuadorian habano wrapper occured during the switch to the regular production. The fillers are still Dominican tobaccos from the company’s La Canela farms, as is the binder. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Air Bender Maduro is offered in Chisel (6 1/2 x 54, $9.20), Matatan (5 x 50, $7.60) and Valiant (6 1/4 x 60, $9) sizes, all of which are offered in boxes of 20.

If you are looking for something that’s a little off the beaten path, but still crafted with quality and precision, then the Air Bender is a must smoke.  This is a great cigar and certainly one that I will have again in the future.  The pairing was just about perfect with neither taking over the other.  As I mentioned previously, the two actually meshed so well together that it was difficult to pinpoint which was giving off certain flavors.  Notable pairing flavors: Sweet Tea, Vanilla, Cinnamon

While I enjoyed the dark, heavy and slightly sweet profile of the La Flor Dominicana TAA  2012 Air Bender Maduro Torpedo, the lack of complexity in the blend really took my enthusiasm down a notch. Having said that, overall construction was wonderful for the most part, there was quite a bit of smoke production, and unlike most of Litto's sticks, the strength was not overwhelming at all, and actually worked in harmony with the blend. The profile is right down my ally, but honestly, I would rather pay more and get one of the Small Batch No. 4 or the new Small Batch No. 4 Oscuro .
