If you go back a little over a decade ago, La Gloria Cubana was a brand that was given considerable attention by Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG). During the “Team La Gloria” days, the brand had a lot of innovation. There was a two-segment wrapped cigar, cigars with smokeable bands, and even one meant to resemble […] Key flavors: Natural Tobacco, Banana, Earth, Wood, Cedar, Mixed Pepper.

Towards the end of last year, Forged Cigar Company announced a new line for the La Gloria Cubana brand, Criollo de Oro. This is a limited edition cigar that gets its name from a type of tobacco for the wrapper of this blend which is a hybrid of Criollo ’98 and Cuban seed Pelo de Oro. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. La Gloria Cubana Criollo de Oro is produced at the El Credito Cigar Factory in Santiago, D.R. Only 3,100 boxes were made. La Gloria Cubana Criollo De Oro uses the the proprietary Criollo de Oro tobacco as the wrapper in the blend. It is grown in the humid microclimate of Mao, Dominican Republic in the Cibao Valley. The fest of the blend uses a Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and a blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran filler tobaccos. The box artwork for Criollo de Oro takes queues from art deco and features the brand’s Lady La Gloria marque. The boxes use a dark toned wood. The cigar comes in two vitolas: Toro (5.75” x 54) $10.49 MSRP, and Churchill (7” x 48) $10.99 MSRP.

White peppercorn | Dandelion tea | Beurre noisette Firm but lumpy shaft and we're only halfway to a giggity-time. Seams loosen, burn wonks. Brightly-harsh olfactory and palate. Beurre noisette is AKA brown butter.

On paper, the makeup and design of the Criollo de Oro should bring a unique limited experience. However, it turned out to be fairly average and light on flavor. The tight draw limited the flavors but kept the cigar cool, though unfortunately it did not produce the payout in the end. The light flavors can be enjoyable—that of earthy cinnamon, farmer-market salted caramel, wet earthy mineral, and finishing with a rye bread retrohale. However, I was left wanting more in terms of intensity and complexity of those flavors.

At its best, at least from a smokability standpoint, the La Gloria Cubana Criollo de Oro Toro was too harsh for my liking. Unfortunately, the other two cigars had tight draws and were rather difficult to smoke. The question I had hoped to start to answer—what’s this new tobacco like—not only remains unsolved but it didn’t even really get started. The takeaway after smoking three of the Criollo de Oros is that it doesn’t matter what the tobacco tastes like when the rest of cigar isn't bunched properly, a conclusion that is never fun to end a review with.

La Gloria Cubana Criollo de Oro is a limited edition cigar made in the Dominican Republic. These cigars were released in October 2021, and are available in two sizes, a Toro (5.75 x 54) and a Churchill (7 x 48) priced at $10.49 and $10.99, respectively. The cigars feature a proprietary Dominican Criollo de Oro wrapper, which is a hybrid that was developed by crossing Cuban Criollo 1998 and Cuban Pelo de Oro seeds. The binder is a Connecticut Broadleaf and the filler is a blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos. For more information, please refer to thepress release. The sample LGC Criollo de Oro Toro cigar started off with a sweet peppery flavor. After about 10 minutes, the sweet pepper began to moderate a bit, when a cedar taste emerged. The smoke was medium bodied. A minor touch-up was applied around this time. A few minutes later, there was a brief hint of nuts as a slight citrus flavor entered the mix. Another minor touch-up was needed at the 30-minute mark. After about 55 minutes into the smoke, the cedar flavor backed off just a bit, and the smoke became slightly smoother. A relight was required at this point, where around 2½ inches of the cigar were still left. During the 70 minutes that it took me to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining, the cigar had a good draw, held a long ash, and had a somewhat even burn, although a couple of minor touch-ups and one relight (near the end) were applied as indicated above. Overall, the La Gloia Cubana Criollo de Oro Toro cigar was a decent enough smoke, worthy of a rating of 3.75 points on a 5-point scale. This cigar will probably improve with age, and I'll bet that the makers will likely continue to experiment with the new hybrid wrapper.

Overall, the flavor profile of the La Gloria Cubana Criollo de Oro Toro was pretty boring. A typical profile from the brand that didn't bring anything unique with the hybrid wrapper. The price point isn't anything crazy, but not something that I think brings value. Not a cigar I'd see myself coming back to.
