La Gloria Cubana Estelí Robusto
Blind Man's Puff · Oct 14, 2019 · August 2018
The La Gloria Cubana Estelí was the new release for the LGC brand at last years (2018) IPCPR trade show. Previously, La Gloria Cubana cigars used Nicaragua tobacco in the blends, but STG Estelí actually rolled these cigars in Estelí, Nicaragua. STG Estelí rolls many cigars for General Cigar but this marks the first for the LGC brand. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. La Gloria Cubana Estelí comes in three sizes, all in 25 count boxes: Robusto (4 1/2 x 52) — $4.99, Toro (5 1/2 x 54) — $5.99, and Gigante (6 1/4 x 60) — $6.99. The blend for La Gloria Cubana Estelí uses a wrapper from Jalapa, and binders and fillers from two areas of Honduras.

One of several additions to General Cigars’ venerable stable of brands, the La Gloria Cubana Estelí showcases the craftsmanship of the folks who made it.

The last two years of new cigars coming out of the STG Estelí factory can very easily be described as: CAO and everything that is not CAO. There have been six ratings of CAO-branded cigars, with an average of 89.67 points; there have been four reviews—not counting this one—of non-CAO cigars from STG Estelí scoring an average of 83.25 points. My own personal results are the same story. If there’s anything else the cigars have in common it’s that the CAO releases have been generally higher priced, whereas the non-CAO cigars have been aggressively priced. The results seem to speak for themselves and the narrative continues here. On one hand, it’s nice to see that the more expensive, and oftentimes limited, products are better; but I also wonder why the CAO products seem to be better. While the score isn't the best, at potentially $4 per cigar there's a ton of value for the La Gloria Cubana Estelí.

La Gloria Cubana Esteli cigars debuted during August 2018, and should not be confused with theLa Gloria Cubana Serie R Esteli Cigarsthat came out during 2013 (with a Maduro version debuting in 2016). The new La Gloria Cubana Esteli cigar is made in Nicaragua with a Nicaraguan wrapper and a blend of filler tobaccos and binder from Honduras. These cigars are available in three sizes, including a Robusto (4½ x 52) priced at $4.99 per cigar, which was sampled for this review. For more information about La Gloria Cuban Esteli cigars, please check out thepress release. The LGC Esteli Robusto began with a nice sweet peppery flavor, which lasted about 5-10 minutes until a predominately cedar taste with hints of spice took over. A hint of sweetness also lingered throughout the remainder of the cigar, which was medium-to-full bodied. The cigar had a good draw, held a medium-to-long ash, and had a somewhat even burn that needed a touch-up light at about the half-way point. The cigar burned slowly, taking me just over 45 minutes to smoke all the way down to two inches remaining – not bad for a relatively short cigar measuring only 4½ inches long. I enjoyed this new La Gloria Cubana Esteli cigar more than the LGC Serie R Esteli, and rate it with a very good 4 points on a 5-point scale. Although not overpowering, these cigars may be a bit too much for beginners, but should not be intimidating to most mainstream cigar smokers. At a price of only $4.99 per stick, they are a good value and worth giving a try.

The La Gloria Cubana Esteli Robusto is an interesting cigar with a flavor profile that has distinct evolution through each third. Reaching an overall flavor strength of medium-full at times, you're treated to earth, leather, toasted notes, spices, creme brulee, chocolate and baking spices.
