From its release in 2006, the Liga Privada line has been a star. The original release, the Liga Privada No. 9, was initially launched to a limited number of retailers around the country. Fans of the brand would reserve their boxes, and many stores had to implement buying limits; it was insanely popular almost from day 1. The company subsequently released a bevy of different sizes including the wildly popular and sought after Flying Pig. Three years later the T52 version of the Liga Privada was

Drew Estate brought a lot of new releases to the IPCPR trade show this year, this one was maybe the most well received. The new blend is called Liga Privada H99 and uses a Connecticut Corojo wrapper. This is the first new regular production Liga Privada since the T52 in 2009. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend uses a Corojo wrapper from the Connecticut River Valley wrapped over a blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers. The binder is a Otapan Negro Ultimo Corte that Willy Herrera says pairs well with the sweetness of the wrapper. The Liga Privada H99 comes in one vitola at release, a toro that measures 6 x 52 and comes in boxes of 24 with an MSRP of $343.92 per box. There will be more vitolas in the future. The cigar was introduced at IPCPR this year, but as of this release has not been shipped, and this is banded as a pre-release.

After some of my recent reviews, it felt like I was in a rut of average to below-average cigars that were plagued with construction issues, middling flavor and decent but otherwise forgettable experiences. Then a cigar like the Liga Privada H99 Connecticut Corojo Papas Fritas lands on my to-smoke list and promptly dashes the memory of those cigars by showing that a small format can pack a ton of flavor amidst an engaging flavor journey, all while doing so with near-flawless construction. Other than a build-up of black pepper in the second half that occasionally oversteps the line for my preference, there’s little to fault with the cigar. Instead, I find myself compelled to praise the profile as a whole and its moments of nuanced aromas and well-layered flavors. A fantastic cigar that I hope will continue to deliver in the future as it did this time.

In the cigar hobbyist's journey for flavor and intensity, there comes a time when the palate is almost unfazeable. Where you could once simply light up the next maduro-wrapped flavor of the week, or find the cigar with the most ligero, now you're looking for more. You may not even know what that more is, but spotting it becomes more and more rare, and in turn, satisfying. By now, you've no doubt guessed that this situation applies to the Liga Privada H99 Connecticut Corojo, a powerhouse blend that is not intense for intensity's sake, but because it's what the recipe required. I wouldn't even call this a "nicotine bomb" cigar, but there's so much dense, gritty, gooey flavor that the palate may be fooled into thinking it has such levels of nicotine. H99 feels like the heavyset sibling to the T52, brining a similar punch but delivered with more weight. This is the cigar to awaken the dullest of palates, making you feel like you did when you experienced your first Liga Privada.

An earthy smoke with elements of dark chocolate, espresso and a warm, sweet note of apple pie. The earthiness continues onto the finish along with a hint of raisin. The draw and burn are even throughout.

Today I would like to take you to the Connecticut River Valley where some of the finest tobacco is grown much on farms whose harvests are sold exclusively to Drew Estate. In the case of the H99 Phineas Gage, it is a special hybrid corojo/habano that was created for the wrapper of the cigar. Holt's Staff Reviews · Mar 21, 2025
Back in 2018, the folks at Drew Estate expanded their popular Liga Privada brand with the H99 line to compensate for the high demand for its Liga T52 and Liga No.9 blends, which occasionally sell out due to the rarity of some of the tobaccos that go into the cigars. I’m smoking a Liga Privada H99 in a 6-by-52 Toro. H99 is named for its wrapper leaf, a Cuban-seed Corojo varietal grown in the Connecticut River Valley. A complex recipe of tobaccos under the wrapper includes a binder from San Andrés and long-fillers from Nicaragua, Honduras, and Pennsylvania.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews
Drew Estate Liga Privada H99 Connecticut Corojo Papas Fritas
Developing Palates · Nov 22, 2023 · June 2023
This Drew Estate Liga Privada H99 Connecticut Corojo Papas Fritas is a fun smoke that delivers a ton for what it is and how cheap it is. I loved the profile though, I can see some not caring for it, and I think the vitola is great. It is small enough to deliver the flavors of this blend and not have it become too much or monotonous. I have smoked a handful of these, and they are all great.
