Macanudo Emissary France Churchill
Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2026
General Cigar Co. has diversified its Macanudo portfolio far beyond the popular, yet mild, Macanudo Café line, which is often synonymous with the brand. Take Macanudo Emissary France, released in 2025 as a follow-up to Macanudo Emissary España. Like the España, Emissary France is made from a blend defined by uncommon tobacco: filler leaf from southwestern France. The remaining fillers are a combination of Connecticut broadleaf, Dominican Piloto and Brazilian Arapiraca, held together by a broadleaf binder and an Ecuador Habano wrapper. The unique blend shines in this Churchill, a dark cigar that marries bold notes of leather and black pepper with sweeter impressions of coffee bean and cocoa.

I have always been interested in how different tobaccos—even in small amounts—can have major effects on cigar blends, so I was excited to see what the Macanudo Emissary France Perfecto brought to the table. What I found was a cigar with an engaging and clean profile that features some interesting notes, including a somewhat unique sweet floral flavor and a fresh raspberry sweetness on the retrohale. When it came to construction, there was not much to complain about: only one cigar needed a minor burn correction to stay on track and the draws were excellent despite the perfecto vitola. Utilizing unique tobacco as part of a blend can lead a company down many different paths—some good, some not so good—but I am happy to say that the Macanudo Emissary France is an enjoyable, easy-smoking cigar and a nice addition to General's portfolio.

The sophomore release in the Macanudo Cigars’ Emissary lineup is the Emissary France. According to Macanudo’s website the cigar features, “rare and refined French tobacco grown in the Mugron River Valley, nestled between Bordeaux and the Spanish border. Nurtured by the Atlantic sea breeze and the region’s rich terroir, this tobacco develops distinct notes of...

Macanudo Emissary France cigars are made in Honduras with an aged Ecuadorian Habano Wrapper, aged USA Broadleaf Binder, and a blend of aged Dominican Piloto, USA Broadleaf, and Brazilian Arapiraca filler tobaccos along with some rare filler grown near Bordeaux, France. These cigars became available during March 2025, in four sizes including a Robusto (5 x 52) priced at $14.99 per cigar, which is the subject of this review. For more information about these cigars, please see thepress release. Macanudo Emissary France is the second cigar in the Emissary series, behind theMacanudo Emissary Espana Cigarthat was released in March 2024. Both Macanudo Emissary lines of cigars incorporate some nontraditional European filler tobaccos in their blends. The sample Macanudo Emissary France Robusto began with an earthy and somewhat floral flavor along with a small dose of subtle spice. The smoke was close to medium-to-full bodied, so let's just call it medium-plus. I ashed the cigar for the first time after 15 minutes as the smoke was becoming smoother. The floral flavor then started to evolve into more of a Burgundy taste that lasted about 10 minutes before gradually fading away. Beyond this point, the flavor stayed pretty much consistent. I ashed the cigar for a second time at the 35-minute mark. The cigar lasted for another 15 minutes for a total smoking time of 50 minutes, down to 1½ inches remaining. During that time, the cigar had a great draw, maintained an even burn and held a somewhat long ash. No relights nor touch-ups were needed, and the cigar was very well constructed. The sample Macanudo Emissary France cigar that is made with some French filler tobacco had a bit more of an unusual flavor than the Emissary Espana cigar made with some Spanish tobacco, However, the unusual flavors in both cigars were not as pronounced as some other cigars that used nontraditional tobaccos in their blends (such as Foundry and several CAO cigars). Macanudo Emissary cigars still taste a bit different, but do not stray too far from the more traditional tobacco flavors that most cigar smokers know and love. I enjoyed the Macanudo Emissary France cigar almost as much as the Espana version, and rate it with a superior 4.25 points on a 5-point scale. I found it to be just a bit fuller with a slightly more unusual flavor. Both cigars are worth a try, and you should compare them both for yourself. A hard to pry-apart high frequency consistent cacophony. Subdued sweet/sour sensation. Apricot, mulling spices. Cedar, golden raisin, white chocolate. Look for anything, find anything. Don't look, it ain't there. Loads, either way. Anxious, tense. Angst. Will likely mature into a finer offering. I will try to post another look soon(ish).

Emissary France starts rather mild with bits of earth, very subtle spice, and the lightest touch of cream. Coffee seamlessly mixes with the cream within a dozen puffs. The Macanudo Emissary France Robusto offers a visually distinctive presentation and a well-behaved construction, backed by a very good burn and a moderately firm draw that eased up with time. Overall, it’s a solid offering with a balanced start and a consistent, if subdued, finish, ideal for those who appreciate a measured evolution and traditional earth-forward flavors.
