My Father Cigars finalized the acquisition of the Fonseca brand in December of 2019 and by September of 2020, the revamped Fonseca was hitting stores and being tasted by our panel. It was an instant hit, scoring 93 points and coming in as the No. 2 cigar of 2020. In March of 2024, My Father released the Fonseca Edition MX sporting an ultra flavorful Mexican San Andrés wrapper and again, hit it out of the park similarly climbing up to the No. 2 position in its first year. The Garcia family surprised the cigar world when it announced in 2019 that it bought the trademark for Fonseca, a cigar that had been made in the Dominican Republic for the U.S. market since the 1970s. What wasn’t as surprising is that the Garcias’ version turned out to be quite delicious, especially the Petit Corona. Now that it’s produced at the My Father Cigars factory in Estelí, Fonseca is currently enjoying a renaissance as an all-Nicaraguan composition. The tobaccos, including the Corojo ’99 wrapper, were grown by the Garcias. The Petit Corona shows a dense smoke of gingerbread and toast balanced by a piquant hint of ground red pepper—a spicy Garcia signature that lets you know Fonseca now belongs to them.

My Father Cigars, acquired the famed Fonseca brand from the Quesada cigar family in 2019. Once acquired, My Father Cigars made the decision to revamp the blend along with the branding of Fonseca for a 2020 release. The brand itself, is over 100 years old, originally founded by Don Francisco Fonseca in the 1890’s in Read more about Cigar Review: My Father Cigars Fonseca Robusto – Rated 93[…]

Today, I am reviewing the all-new My Father Fonseca in a well-made 5.5 x 54 Belicoso. Fonseca was conceived in Cuba in 1892 by Don Francisco E. Fonseca. Fonseca cigars are still made today in Cuba by the nation’s state-owned Habanos SA tobacco company, though they are not sold in the U.S. due to the Cuban trade embargo.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews

At the end of 2019, one of the more surprising stories that hit the news was the acquisition of the Fonseca brand by My Father Cigars from the Quesada family. The Fonseca brand was established in Cuba by Don Francisco Fonseca. The Dominican version of the Fonseca brand has been made by the Quesada family […] Key flavors: Natural Tobacco, Earth, Hay, Pepper, Baker’s Spice.

My Father purchased the Fonseca brand from Quesada in December of 2019. The Fonseca brand has been in the U.S. for over 40 years. The deal was made possible because of the friendship between between Janny Garcia of My Father Cigars and Patricia Quesada of Quesada Cigars. The two collaborated with Patricia’s sister, Raquel, on a cigar line called Tres Reynas, that was released in 2012. The Fonseca brand actually predates the Quesadas when it was a Cuban brand starting in 1892. The My Father Fonseca made #17 on our Top 25 Cigars of the Year list 2020. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The My Father Fonseca uses exclusively Nicaraguan tobacco, including a shade grown corojo 99 rosado wrapper. It comes in 6 sizes: Petit Corona (4 1/4 x 40), Robusto (5 1/4 x 52), Cosacos (5 3/8 x 42), Belicosos (5 1/2 x 54), Toro Gordo (6 x 55), and Cedros (6 1/4 x 52). Pricing ranges from $7 to $11.20.

This Fonseca is right in my wheelhouse. When I get to throw around descriptors like honey, sweet cream, roasted peanuts, and leather, then you did something right. My one complaint is that it kind of lacked transitions. The experience was pretty linear, except for an inch or so in the middle. If there was more of a crescendo of flavor or an additional blast of pepper in the middle, then we’d be on Box-Buy Train, destination: My Humidor. All told, this is a very good cigar and a fun reinventing of a brand that deserves to be celebrated.

I really enjoyed the Fonseca by My Father Cedros and I think it is the best release to come out of the factory in a long time. The flavor profile was complex and I thought the finish was brilliant. There is transitioning and depth, and at no point did the strength and body take over from the flavors. Really a lovely blend and an important Nicaraguan puro for the company.
