As is the tradition with numerous My Father cigars, acclaimed father-and-son cigarmakers Pepin and Jaime Garcia resurrected an old-world brand when they released La Gran Oferta, which translates to “the great offer,” in 2018, and today I’m smoking a succulent Torpedo that’s just over 6 inches long with a 52 ring gauge.

A very distinct black cherry note is apparent on the first draw, which also imparts a heavy woody undertone and bold intonations of dark chocolate, dark toast and a sweet maltiness. It maintains an even draw throughout.

A new full production release from My Father Cigars is always a big deal for me, so I was looking forward to seeing what the La Gran Oferta Lancero brought to the table. What I found was a blend that was smooth and flavorful, with extremely good construction and well-integrated strength that never threatens to go over a point slightly stronger than medium. Having said that, other than a base dark chocolate flavor, a dark cherry sweetness and an ever present black pepper note on the retrohale, the flavors seem to be significantly more subtle compared to most My Father blends, meaning there were times when there was virtually no changes at all. While My Father makes a number of better blends—namely the Le Bijou 1922 —the La Gran Oferta certainly has a place in the company's portfolio and I am looking forward to trying the other violas in the line.

La Gran Oferta translates in Spanish into the great offer. The blend uses an Ecuadorian habano rosado wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler. The cigar features artwork inspired by a cigar sold under the same name in 1913. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Liek all other My Father, it is rolled at the My Father Cigars S.A. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. There are five sizes sold in 20 count boxes: Robusto (5 x 50) — $7.80, Lancero (7 1/2 x 38) — $10, Torpedo (6 1/8 x 52) — $8.80, Toro (6 x 50) — $8.40, Toro Gordo (6 x 56) — $8.90.

My Father La Gran Oferta Torpedo

Overall, the profile was quite dark with the dark wood that became charred and the strength that built from medium to medium-full. The My Father La Gran Oferta Torpedo probably isn't something I'd return to, but for those that like dark profiles with the strength to match, I could see this being something that draws them in.
