Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Torpedo

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2022

Along with excellence and distinction, consistency has always been heavily weighed when we create our annual Top 25 rankings. And no cigar company has been as consistent as Padrón. It was the first manufacturer to be named Cigar of the Year for 2004 when we started publishing this awards list, and now, 17 years later, Padrón has produced the No. 1 cigar of 2021. This is the fourth time for Padrón to be named Cigar of the Year, making this family-owned business the record holder. Furthermore, Padrón has now occupied a place in the top five every year but one, for a total of 16 times. The Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series was released in 1994 when the company celebrated 30 years in business. The cigar was made by company founder (and Cuban émigré) José Orlando Padrón and his son Jorge. The idea was to make a high-end cigar from exceptional tobaccos with more age. Before 1994, Padrón’s production was mostly made up of its flagship brown-label brand. It was a good cigar at a good price—and still is—but a creation for an anniversary as big as 30 years had to be taken to the next level. The final product was a cigar of sun-grown, Cuban-seed tobaccos from Nicaragua. It was José’s idea to give the cigars the signature box-pressing. He wanted a smoke that resembled the cigars he used to enjoy in Cuba. “Not that we invented the box-press,” said Jorge Padrón, “but at the time there weren’t any box-pressed cigars in the market.” That presentation eventually changed the landscape of the premium industry. The 1964 Anniversary Series was an enormous commercial and critical success, inspiring other companies to follow suit and box-press their cigars as well. Today, box-pressed and trunk-pressed cigars are commonplace in the market. From the Family Reserve to the Serie 1926, Padrón’s brands have been a mainstay on every Top 25 list this magazine has ever released, but this is the first time a cigar from the 1964 Anniversary Series has been named Cigar of the Year. The Torpedo serves as a fine example of everything the Padróns wanted to achieve. Box-pressed and attractive, it starts with a woody, nutty core that gradually becomes more complex. Notes of hazelnut are uncannily precise and segue into a rich, opulent smoke of cocoa bean that settles onto the palate like the fine confections of a chocolatier. The draw and burn are perfect and the cigar’s only flaw is that it ends.

Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Presidente Maduro

Cigar Dojo · Apr 3, 2018

What's old is new again, as Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Presidente Maduro adds a much-needed 6" x 50 toro vitola to the historic 1964 series. Presidente is one of two new additions to the brand, using an unorthodox square-shaped tubo presentation to set itself apart. The cigar begins a little off , with some strange and almost harsh qualities. This lasts only minutes, springing to life with an extremely full smoking experience. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, white pepper, powdered sugar sweetness, and mineral are plentiful and on full blast. The profile remains full for nearly the entire smoke time, with strength increasing to medium/full and flavors eventually backing down a notch in the final third. The profile is very complex and progresses nicely—a smoking experience worthy of its acclaimed background and luxurious price.

Cigar Snob · Jan 8, 2020

That this is Padrón’s first time in the number-one spot on our Top 25 list will probably come as a surprise to many — although we know that Padrón’s club of superfans, the Bastards, are well aware; they wouldn’t let us forget that we’d never named a Padrón Cigar of the Year. That’s just the way the cookie had always crumbled. Between the emergence of other exciting, delicious cigars and the fact that our rubick gives a little extra weight to more recent releases, the time had just never come fo

Padrón 1964 Anniversary

Holt's Staff Reviews · Nov 27, 2017

The name Padrón is synonymous with the finest quality, top-shelf Nicaraguan cigars. Rooted in a deep, multi-generational family tradition which began in Cuba in the 1800s, the Padrón family has been making cigars in Estelí, Nicaragua, since 1970. The proud recipient of numerous 90+ ratings, as well as a trio of Cigar Aficionado “Cigar of the Year” awards, Padrón is a fan-favorite amongst cigar lovers during celebratory occasions. Today just so happens to be my brother-in-law’s birthday. I got him into smoking cigars a few years back and now we are regular smoking buddies.

Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series SI-15 Maduro

Halfwheel · Apr 8, 2011 · April 2011

This cigar is a flavor bomb! While not the most complex flavors—and let's be honest, Padróns are not really known for their complexity—the notes that are present are amazingly rich and distinct. The minor annoyances—the monstrous ring gauge for one and the fairly loose draw for another—pale in comparison to the wonderful flavors. Add in the surprising strength for such a large ring gauge and you have a winner, no matter how you slice it.

PADRÓN 1964 ANNIVERSARY SERIES MADURO

Comedy Cigars Music · Jan 2, 2022

Chocolate, barnyard, dry and wet hay, and cinnamon emanate from the 1964’s foot and wrapper. Padróns have an outwardly appearance that always strike me as a bit rugged. A few bumps here and there. Like an old school grandpa that’s a bit rough around the edges, but he gets the job done, and it’s solid. Doesn’t need a pat on the back.O

Padron 1964 Anniverary Maduro - Cigar Review for Cigars City

Kaplowitz · Oct 26, 2015

Not boring, but relaxing. If I didn't fully enjoy the affair, perhaps it's for the same reason I get fidgety in a bubble bath instead of luxuriating. Fans of Maduro will love this, as will fans who want fuller tastes and body with lighter strength. A very pleasing cigar, but struck me as a politician unwilling to alienate any part of their voting public. Even the separate elements of its flavor profile seemed unwilling to risk offending, as none completely emerged from the others. Pairings : Tec

Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Maduro Exclusivo

Developing Palates · Jul 30, 2021 · 1994

I found the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Maduro Exclusivo to be a slighter better overall experience than the Natural, but it's still not something that really intrigues me as it is just a bit too heavy on the dark wood and earth to be enjoyable over the whole smoking experience. If you're a fan of the heavier wood and earth focused profiles, it's definitely something that may fit your wheelhouse.

Padron 1964 AnniversarioNo. 4 Maduro

CigarCzars · Aug 5, 2020

The 4th cigar in our Opus X challenge is Padron 1964 Maduro No. 4. This is a good one for the challenge. Introduced in 1994, it was to mark Padron’s 30 years in the industry. It is very appropriate that our #4 pick is the No. 4 – 64. This is a Nicaraguan puro, meaning that the wrapper, binder and filler are all grown in Nicaragua. The uniqueness of this cigar is the wrapper, it is aged for 4 years (hmmm, there’s that number four again). The wrapper is flawless with just the right amount of firmness. The pre-light draw has the perfect level of resistance. The burn is even, the ash is solid, and I didn’t want to put it down even to make these notes. The aromas here match up well and mirror the flavors. I found the cigar earthy and woodsy with great smoke output. There is a hint of sweetness with a touch of white pepper. I also picked up the aroma of fresh pumpernickel bread. The cigar is smooth and consistent all the way to the last inch. How does the Padron 64 match up to the Opus X? This one of the best cigars I have ever smoked. I think this definitely holds its own and it is $20 (not $30), making it a better value. I still cannot justify spending that amount of a single cigar unless I have something very special to celebrate. I have to admit, it is one of my favorite cigars, but the last one I smoked before this one was about 10 years ago.
