At one time, I thought the only Padron cigars I cared for were Maduros…the Family Reserve Natural proved me wrong.

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2019
Is it any surprise to see a Padrón cigar in the top five position of Cigar Aficionado's Top 25? The company's cigars have been named Cigar of the Year a record three times, and have always appeared on the upper echelons of the list—and why shouldn't they? Padróns are loaded with aged Nicaraguan tobacco full of flavor, aroma and resonance. Take for example this Padrón Family Reserve No. 44, the first in the series of Family Reserve cigars. When it was created in 2007, it was only available at select Padrón events where a family member was present (hence the name of the brand). There was obviously something special about the cigar. Eventually, the Padróns decided to release the blend commercially, albeit in very limited quantities and at quite a high retail price. The number 44 represents the company's 44th year in business, which it celebrated in 2008.Padrón cigars tend to have a few signature gustatory qualities, like chocolate, coffee and nuts. The Family Reserve No. 44 is no different. Its tapered torpedo head concentrates and magnifies these flavor elements, all of which are dynamic and refined, but also rich without being too heavy or overpowering. Great cigars are a hallmark of this family-owned cigar company, but so is consistency. Chances are, the first cigar you light up from a box of Padróns—any box—will be just as fantastic as the last.

As I was smoking each one of these cigars, a litany of adjectives kept running through my mind, with "incredibly smooth" and "supremely balanced" at the forefront. The profile is classic Padrón, not overly complex, but there is that little bit extra that I was hoping for that really sets it apart from its brothers, mostly in the sweetness that is present in the final two thirds. Is this cigar better than my favorite releases from Padron, namely the 1964 Exclusivo Natural and the No. 45? Yes, indeed. Is it $50-75 better per cigar? Probably not. As for which of the Padrón 50th Anniversary Limited Editions I like better? Natural over Maduro. Having said that, Padrón set out to commemorate its anniversary with a quality, unique blend, and in that regard, they succeeded.

The Padron Family Reserve Natural No. 96 lead off with some complex flavors as spicy notes dominated for a time, eventually settling down. The second third was just into the good line for flavor balance and the cigar was somewhat linear through the last third. For a super premium priced cigar, although the flavors did just enough to rate good, this isn't something I would return to as I feel Padron has more affordable releases that deliver a better flavor performance.

A complex, spicy, peppery Gordo with base notes of earth, lush aromas of cedar, leather, cocoa, as well as cloves. From time to time, coffee notes and more sweetness come to the fore.
