No product in General Cigar's large portfolio is more powerful and full bodied than the Punch Diablo, but the cigar isn't just an excessive display of power for power's sake alone. The strength is justified because it serves as a vehicle to deliver levels of richness that no Punch has ever achieved. Each puff of the El Diablo Scamp is like biting into a dense piece of chocolate fudge studded with espresso beans and walnuts.To conjure such decadence, General enlisted the services of A.J. Fernandez, who devised this blend by incorporating an Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper with a broadleaf binder and Cuban-seed tobaccos from Nicaragua and Honduras. This is the first Punch owned by General to be made outside Honduras.

The Punch Diablo is blended by A.J. Fernández, which marks the first time the General-owned Punch brand will have a cigar made somewhere outside of the company’s factory in Honduras. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. It is blended with an Ecuadorian Sumatra oscuro, Connecticut broadleaf binder, and fillers from Honduras and Nicaragua. It comes in three sizes: Scamp (6 1/8 x 50) — $7.19, Diabolus (5 1/4 x 54) — $7.79, Punch Diablo Brute (6 1/4 x 60) — $8.19.

One of the big surprises coming out of IPCPR 2018—as far as General Cigar Co. was concerned—was the Punch Diablo. While the Punch of yesteryear had alway been known for its full-bodied smoking style, the brand had become lost in the shuffle of today's heavy-hitting nicotine bombs. Punch sought to correct course with Punch Diablo, partnering with the industry's hottest tobacco blender: A.J. Fernández. Using aged tobaccos throughout the entire blend (four to six years on every leaf), A.J. crafted a strong cigar with a theoretical complexity for support. This was the idea pitched for Punch Diablo, and, in my opinion, it is more or less true. The cigar begins with a bang, offering the peppery strength you'd expect (though not much else). In the second third, the blend really hits its stride, opening up to show deep notes of black cherry sweetness, hickory, black licorice, black pepper, and virtually anything else that begins with the word "black!" But it's a steep drop-off in the final third, losing nearly all complexity. Ultimately, a good construction, smooth draw, and affordable price point make this a big win for Punch, with the mid-section acting as a bonus of flavor you wouldn't normally find in this price range.

Punch Diablo is the first Punch-brand cigar from General Cigar that is being made outside of Honduras. Blended by AJ Fernandez in Nicaragua, Diablo became the fullest-bodied line of Punch cigars as of the date of their debut in July 2018. The Punch Diablo is made with a blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos, a Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. The cigars are available in three sizes, including the Scamp (6 1/8 x 50) priced at $7.19 per stick, which was sampled for this review. For more info about these cigars, please refer to thepress release. The Punch Diablo Scamp cigar began with the obvious taste of pepper along with some sweetness in the background. The pepper tamed down a bit after the first few puffs, as deep rich earthy flavors, wood and leather became predominant, accompanied by some sweetness, pepper and notes of spice in the background. The body and flavor were full during the first half of the cigar, but moved into the medium-to-full range during the second half. The Punch Diablo also has some noticeable strength, but it was not over the top and remained mostly in the medium-to-full range throughout the smoke. Still, this is not a cigar for beginners nor most average cigar smokers. Punch Diablo is designed for more advanced smokers and experienced connoisseurs who enjoy a full and potent smoke. Punch Diablo is well made and has a very good draw, even burn, and holds a long ash. It took me 75 minutes to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining. During that time, the cigar did not need any relights nor touch-ups, but I did apply a quick booster light at about the 45-minute mark, just to keep the cigar burning perfectly. Although the cigar was a bit stronger than I prefer, I still enjoyed the Punch Diablo enough to rate it with a superior 4.25 points on a 5-point scale. Nice tobacco flavors and well made, but also designed to be a potent smoke for those who want a bit more.

Every once in a while, I’ll test my nicotine tolerance with a strong cigar, and today I’m firing up the 5.25-by-54 Diabolus in the Punch Diablo blend. General Cigar, parent company of the Punch brand, chose “The Dark Side of Punch” as the tagline for Diablo cigars to emphasize their robust flavor, and many cigar smokers agree, Diablo is indeed a potent smoke. In 1840 in Cuba, a German guy by the name of Stockmann founded Punch cigars, naming them for the mischievous Punch character, a British puppet famous for tangling with his puppet wife Judy during marionette performances.

This is a below average cigar at an above average price, which is also how I would describe many of the most recent new Punch blends. General has better cigars at similar prices, A.J. Fernández makes better cigars at similar prices, and the two have certainly teamed up for better cigars.

Overall, I felt the Punch Diablo Scamp was fairly average. For people that are a fan of AJ and like darker, fuller strength cigars, they may find an enjoyable experience. When I'm in the mood for something dark and fuller strength, I'd prefer something with a better flavor profile, so this cigar probably isn't something I'd return to with any frequency.
