Altadis U.S.A. Inc. made a bold statement with the launch of its Romeo by Romeo y Julieta line last year. Not only is the packaging very assertive, but the blend is perhaps the strongest, most complex Romeo y Julieta to come out of the Dominican Republic. One of the major departures for the Romeo brand is the wrapper. Traditional non-Cuban Romeos are made with Indonesian wrappers and have a much milder flavor profile. Romeo by Romeo y Julieta carries a dark, oily leaf of Ecuadoran Habano-seed wrapper around a gutsy Dominican blend. Though many companies are using this type of wrapper, Altadis has really hit the mark with its new line. Most of the sizes are fairly large, which adheres to current trends, but at 6 1/8 inches by 52 ring, the Pirámide is a classic Cuban pyramid size. Each puff layers the palate with a brawny core of black and red pepper spice, savory leather flavor and sweet impressions of raisins and dried fruit—a truly balanced smoke that covers the sweet, salty and spicy spectrum with elegance and strength. It's rolled at the Tabacalera de Garcia factory in La Romana, Dominican Republic and includes Dominican Olor and Piloto to complement the flavorful wrapper. While the Romeo by Romeo y Julieta may seem to contradict the idea that a large operation can never achieve the type of quality and complexity usually associated with smaller, boutique style brands, it may be time to rethink that notion.

Something we were all looking forward to seeing at this year’s IPCPR trade show was the ROMEO by Aging Room. We have been fans of this new trend of Boutique brands collaborating with big established brands and seeing what they can do. The Romeo y Julieta and Aging Room from Altadis U.S.A. was released in May 2015. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. “Immaculately constructed by Aging Room artisans under the guidance of Romeo y Julieta’s famed Grupo de Maestros, this Dominican puro exemplifies the best qualities of two storied brands,” said an Altadis U.S.A. spokesperson. “It is a rare smoke that will truly be treasured.” ROMEO by Romeo y Julieta ‘s Aging Room is said to be rich, savory, medium- to full-bodied. It is handcrafted with 100% Habano Dominican tobaccos. These rare leaves are carefully grown in the Cibao valley — one of the most fertile tobacco growing regions on earth — and patiently aged. Designated F-25, this limited – edition, single batch cigar was imagined on Friday, the 25th of the month. This cigar is available in three sizes: 54 x 6” Capriccio, 52 x 6” Cantaor and 48 x 5” Copla. These small batch cigars will retail between $11.50 and $12.50 per stick. What Romeo y Julieta’s Aging Room offers here is nothing short of luxury: deep, rich, creamy flavors bursting with pepper and dark chocolate, it’s every cigar lover’s dream. I only wish it would be easier to attain. With multiple touch-ups, a relight, and never being able to put my ROMEO down for more than a few seconds—it really took away from the experience. I really enjoyed smoking the ROMEO; I only wish it would have been easier to do so.

Like Steve Saka , I find these type of "collaborations" in the cigar world extremely interesting, and I do wonder if they will become more common in the future, if only because they are something relatively new to the majority of the cigar community. As for the ROMEO by Romeo y Julieta Aging Room Small Batch F25 Capriccio, it is extremely well constructed, and while the profile is not knock-your-pants-off exciting, it does have some very distinct flavors and a clean finish that made it consistently enjoyable to smoke. A success for both parties involved, and well worth the time and effort to track down.
