I have no clue how old these are, but given where they were, they haven’t been acquired in the last year. And that’s a good sign because this aged-at the very least somewhat-Surrogates Cracker Crumbs were quite impressive. Flawless construction, big and smooth flavor and a smoking time that is just a bit longer than you’d reasonably expect. Pete Johnson makes a lot of cigars, so it’s oftentimes easy to forget about many of them. This is one that I’ve forgotten about up until now, but not anymore.

Blind Man's Puff · Mar 8, 2024 · July 2023
The L’Atelier Surrogates Big Ten, initially introduced as a limited edition at the 2022 PCA Convention & Trade Show, has expanded its lineup with a new regular production size. This addition was showcased at the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show, with its market release occurring in the summer of 2023. The latest offering is a robusto measuring 5 1/4 inches by 52 ring gauge, featuring an Ecuadorian habano rosado oscuro wrapper, complemented by Nicaraguan binders and fillers. This robusto serves as a continuation of the blend introduced with the Britanicas Extra vitola, a 5 3/8 x 48 perfecto, which marked the blend’s debut. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Pete Johnson of Tatuaje/ L’Atelier, discussing the development process, highlighted the team’s decision to adopt the anniversary blend from the Britanicas Extra, ultimately settling on the 5 1/4 x 52 size after testing various options. Notably, this new vitola utilizes a slightly lower priming of the wrapper compared to its predecessor, a choice that, according to Johnson, yielded a flavor profile favored by the project team. Unlike the Britanicas Extra, which was limited to 500 boxes of 20 cigars, the new size will be available as a regular production item, also packaged in 20-count boxes. Final pricing for the Surrogates Big Ten Robusto is set at $9.50 per cigar. Like the rest of the Surrogates brand, the Surrogates Big Ten is crafted by My Father Cigars S.A. in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Agile Cigar Reviews replace what we termed “Assessment Updates”. The concept is the same, but the name is different. Agile Cigar Reviews use a lightweight, shorter format. These will never take the place of our comprehensive reviews. They are only used on blends we have previously assessed. This might be a blend we are re-scoring or providing […]

This is a great value smoke. The hefty Churchill size with a nice box press makes for a great hand-feel and there are plenty of fun flavors throughout. It may not be the most complex stick, but I'd certainly recommend a 10-pack purchase, or a box if the flavors really hit you right.Read full review on Cigar Dojo
Surrogates Closing Time
Developing Palates · Oct 21, 2024 · June 2024
The Surrogates Closing Time delivered some interesting and engaging flavors in the first third. The cigar remained pleasant in the second third but lacked most of the character delivered previously, and became linear through the last third. Overall, the flavor profile was above average, and the price point is reasonable in the 2024 marketplace. This might be something I could see myself picking up to revisit.
