Tatuaje Black Petite Lancero

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2026

Some people are born into the cigar business. Pete Johnson began making cigars because he loved them. Before he created the Tatuaje brand more than 20 years ago, Johnson worked in cigar shops, from Gus’ Smoke Shop to The Grand Havana Room in Beverly Hills. He learned the business and smoked cigar after cigar. One day, when he was on a trip to Cuba, he smoked a farm-rolled cigar that simply blew him away. His Tatuaje Black brand is inspired by that farm cigar. Tatuaje Black is entirely Nicaraguan, rolled in Nicaragua by the Garcia family and My Father Cigars, the company that makes all Tatuajes. When Johnson first made Tatuaje Black, he kept them all for himself, but thankfully now the brand is widely available. This is not a big cigar (it’s skinny, only a 38 ring gauge) but it has enormous flavor. Sweet in spots (you might think of s’mores around a campfire) and tannic in others (heavy on the oak), it may leave you wondering how such a small smoke can deliver so much flavor. Tatuajes have been on our Top 25 list again and again, but this is the first time one has ranked so high.

Tatuaje Black Label Corona Gorda 2013 (Tatuaje Private Reserve)

Cigar Coop · Sep 23, 2013

Tatuaje Black Label Corona Gorda 2013 As a part of Tatuaje Cigars’ tenth anniversary, company founder Pete Johnson announced the return of the Tatuaje Black Label Corona Gorda. Sometimes referred to as the Tatuaje Private Reserve. The line made its debut back in 2007 in a corona gorda format.  It was sold in a ceramic […]

Tatuaje Black Label Corona Gorda 2013

Cigar Dojo · Jun 2, 2015

Getting past the hype and expectations from the OR CG is not easy. You want the 2013 to be out of this world from the first puff and it is easy to rush through the cigar to get to that last half of pure awesomeness. If you don’t take your time, you will miss out. The Black Label CG is like taking a long drive across an exotic island to a remote beach destination. You know once you get there it will be out of this world and along the way it is difficult to focus on anything but just getting there. If you blare the radio and drive like a maniac to get to the beach in record time, you will miss all the scenery and local attractions along the way. Sure, once this CG does “get to the beach” the sand is whiter, the surf is better, and the bikinis are skimpier than you ever imagined, but if you don’t pay attention on the drive you really miss out on all the island has to offer...

Tatuaje Private Reserve (Black Label) Petite Lancero

Halfwheel · Feb 17, 2011

We ended Tuesday's prerelease review of the Liga Privada L40 with the thought that perhaps a lancero is not always going to be the best vitola for every blend. I will end this review with the thought that this blend is almost perfectly suited for the lancero format. The multitude of flavors that were present in this cigar, especially in the first third, is impressive, even when pitted against other great Tatuaje limited releases. Most likely, your main question when reading this review is some version of well, that is all well and good, but does it taste like/is it better than the original release Corona Gorda? Well, I smoked one of each back to back, and there are some similarities—especially the cinnamon and strong espresso notes that are present throughout the entire cigar—but I think the idea that this would ever taste just like the original release is faulty from the start. Is it better than the original? No, I don't think so, but the Corona Gorda might be one of the top five non-Cuban cigars ever released. Having said all that, this is an amazing cigar in its own right and if the regular release version tastes anything close to these, it will be one of the best regular release cigars on the market today.

Tatuaje Black Label

Cigar Snob · Jan 4, 2023

What started off as a limited release for special events, select retailers, or just simply a private reserve for owner Pete Johnson was converted to a regular production and our panel could not be happier. While there are some differences from those early versions, this petit lancero is an absolute gem worth seeking out at your favorite Tatuaje retailer.

Tatuaje Black

Holt's Staff Reviews · Apr 11, 2025

Tatuaje Black cigars have been around since 2007, but they were difficult to find when they first came out. Today, I’m smoking a 4-by-50 Petit Robusto, a smaller smoke worth considering if you’re stepping outside to smoke in cold weather. Tatuaje cigars are blended and produced for brand founder Pete Johnson by father-and-son cigarmakers Pepin and Jaime Garcia, the duo behind My Father cigars. Pete packaged the first Tatuaje Black Label in either bundles or black ceramic jars. Only 1,000 jars were produced, and Tatuaje collectors scooped them up.

Tatuaje Black Label Private Reserve Britanicas Extra

Developing Palates · Jan 7, 2021 · September 2020

The Tatuaje Black Label Private Reserve Britanicas Extra is a well harmonized cigar with subtle notes that play off of each other through the first and second thirds. The last third was pleasant, but didn't keep me engaged enough. I enjoyed this offering from Tatuaje and would happily seek it out to smoke again.
