Pete Johnson, owner of Tatuaje Cigars, did an experiment in 2022. He released three short robustos called Cohete (Spanish for “rocket”), and gave them three different wrappers. All of them were memorable smokes, but the blend that really took off for us was the Capa Especial, which is wrapped in an attractive leaf of Sumatra-seed tobacco grown in Ecuador. It was also the tastiest Tatuaje we had in 2022. Made in Nicaragua by My Father Cigars, the cigar bursts with spicy notes of nutmeg, cumin and black pepper all fortified by an underlying earthiness and hint of chocolate. The finish leaves a touch of cinnamon on the palate making this a bold and delicious creation.

I have been looking forward to the Cohete re-rerelease ever since we first heard about it, as it has always been one of my favorites of the Brown Label vitolas. Having said that, I have never found the Brown Labels to be the most complex of profiles when fresh, but with a little bit of age, they really tend to shine. The 2013 version of the Cohete is no different in that regard: extremely rich and dense flavors, great finish and great construction is par for the course for this release, but if you are looking for a cigar to change profiles significantly and often, this is not your smoke. Having said that, these are very good now, well worth buying and after smoking a 2009 and 2006 versions to compare, I am confident in how well they will age over the long term.

Sometimes you don't need to write three paragraphs of flavor descriptions, and such is the case with the Tatuaje Cohete Capa Especial. Delivering interesting and engaging flavors through the first and second thirds, it was pleasant through the last third but without the same level of flavor balance. I'll happily pick more of these up.
