The Original El Triunfador was made back in 2008. It was not publicized and only available for ordering by asking specifically for that cigar. The word “ El Triunfador ” translates to The Winner in spanish. It was only made it one size, the lancero, and according to Pete Johnson was only made to use his trademark on the old Cuban Brand of the same name. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. In 2009, the regular production El Triunfador was announced as a milder blend outside the US. Then months later was expanded to the US including six vitoals. The El Triunfador Original blend made a comeback in the form of Petite Lancero Limited SODO in 2010, a 6 x 38 petite lancero released exclusively for Seattle-based J&J Cigars. The year after that, Tatuaje released The Old Man and the C in the El Triunfador Original blend consisting of a lancero and culebra. Recently, at the 2018 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show, Tatuaje released the fourth vitola in the El Triunfador Original line, a 5 x 50 robusto. It has same blend as the first releases featuing a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper and Nicaraguan tobacco binder and filler. The cost is $10 each.

When seeing this wrapper for the first time, I was a bit taken aback by the lighter shade, especially considering most of Tatuaje's other cigars. I knew this would be a milder blend, and I was not disappointed in that regard. I would put this at a mild-plus to a lighter medium. It is also not the most complex cigar on the planet, but I could tell that a lot of thought had gone into the flavors that are present. When I was talking to Pete Johnson about this blend, I asked him what profile he was going for in this cigar and he told me that he wanted to produce an everyday kind of cigar, one that you could smoke every day, at any time, and never get bored. Honestly, I think he nailed it. The flavor is very reminiscent of an older Cuban cigar, milder with sweet undertones and a long, clean finish that ties it all together. While milder cigars do not make up the bulk of my smoking, I do appreciate a change of pace cigar and I have a feeling this will be one of those for me, especially considering the great price point.
