I ask a lot from the cigars I smoke. I think we all do. We ask for good construction and combustion. We look for a smooth draw with well-packed tobacco. We ask for complexity and balance of flavor. That’s a lot to ask. We’re a bit demanding. Why does this matter? It matters because these are the things we have in our heads before we put flame to tobacco. It matters because we are not easy to please. Okay, I’ll speak for myself. I am not easy to please. On top of that I had very high expectations of this cigar based on my previous experiences. The deck was stacked against the ME II. It was far more likely to disappoint and not meet these lofty expectations, but sometimes we are reminded that, when a blender really knows tobacco, wondrous things can happen! The Tatuaje ME II will probably have a spot in my personal Top 15 Cigars of 2019 list. It may have a spot in the top half of that list—it was THAT good. It was so good that I’ve smoked four more since I took my notes for this review. It has just about everything I ask for from a cigar—at least in its price range, which, at $10, is more than fair, in my opinion.

The original Tatuaje Mexican Experiment was released in 2012. The cigar was described as a concept to try blending a cigar with a Mexican San Andrés wrapper and see what happened. There were a total of five sizes released and each size was exclusive to either a retailer or a region of the country. They came in bundles of 25. Then, in 2019, Tatuaje decided to make a sequel of sorts to the cigar dubbed the ME II, the ME of course standing for Mexican Experiment. It does not go unnoticed that the name resembles the Me Too movement but seems otherwise unrelated. At the same time, the company re-released the original Mexican Experiment in the original bundles and original sizes. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. It is undisclosed what the difference is between the two blends as both use a Mexican San Andrés wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and filler. The new blend is only released in 4 sizes and this allows Pete Johnson to give them a packing update, whereas the original Mexican Experiment is bound by substantial equivalence to stay the same. Also the re-released of the Mexican Experiment was limited to 1,000 bundles of 15 of each size, while the ME II is a regular production cigar. It is rolled like many other Tatuajes at the My Father Cigars S.A. factory in Nicaragua. All sizes of the ME II come in boxes of 15 and sell for $10. The sizes are: Robusto (5 x 54) – $10, Toro (5 3/4 x 50) – $10, Churchill (6 1/2 x 48) – $10, and Belicoso (5 x 52) – $10.

Tatuaje Limited Series Mexican Experiment Robusto

The key word in this cigar is experiment , and certainly this is more the result of several experiments as opposed to a one-off trial. The results are good if not stellar, with the Tatuaje Mexican Experiment succeeding in showing off some of the better qualities of the Mexican San Andrés wrapper leaf. Is it the most complex Tatuaje out there? No. Is it the best use of a Mexican San Andrés wrapper? Not in my book, as that honor still resides with the La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor. But is it a tasty cigar worth trying? Yes.

The Tatuaje ME II Robusto began well, but once the cocoa left it became fairly average and maintained that level of enjoyment the rest of the way. While I probably won't return to this cigar all that often, I would have no problem coming back to it when I'm in the mood for this style profile on occasion. If you're a fan of Tatuaje and the San Andres blends, you're likely to find something here that you enjoy.
