Tatuaje L’Atelier Négociant Monopole No. 1
Blind Man's Puff · Aug 16, 2017 · April 2017
Tatuaje and L’Atelier Imports are sister brands but this is one of the few joint releases between the two Johnson-owned Tatuaje / L’Atelier Négociant Monopole No. 1. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The name comes from the wine industry. Négociants are winemakers who buy wine or grapes from other growers or producers and use it to create wines of their own. Sometimes a négociant will buy grapes and complete the rest of the process, other times a négociant could buy nearly completed wine and use it to produce their own blended wine. A negotiant may bottle the wine under his own name either as is or after blending with other wines. The term Monopole refers to an area in controlled by a single winery or wine company. The wine from this area is typically sold by one company. The two terms are appropriate to this brand. It was back in 2012 when Tatuaje Cigars’ founder Pete Johnson launched L’Atelier Imports. L’Atelier Imports was off as a separate company from Tatuaje in which Johnson would partner with his brother K.C. Johnson and friends Dan Welsh and Sean “Casper” Johnson. For much of the first three plus years, the Tatuaje and L’Atelier Imports were kept separate. Over the past few years the separation of the two companies has been reducing. The cigar uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, Mexican and Nicaraguan binders and Nicaraguan fillers. This cigar does not contain Sancti Spiritus tobacco, the signature leaf of L’Atelier Imports.

The open draw of this toothy cigar produces a lot of smoke and a lot of flavor as well, starting with a tangy, cedary quality that also shows notes of butterscotch, marzipan and cinnamon all atop a tannic, woody backbone.

The name Négociant comes from the world of wines, which is a passion of brand owner Pete Johnson. The name Négociant is the word given to winemakers who buy wine or grapes from from other growers and use it to create a wine of their own.Read full review on The Cigar Authority
Tatuaje Négociant Monopole No. 4
Cigar Dojo · Sep 27, 2017
When taking into account Tatuaje's collection of core-line cigars, combined with their notorious penchant for regionals, limited editions, and seasonal blends, it's surprising to find a new addition to the regular lineup that still manages to set itself apart. On the other hand, for a brand that specializes in maduro smoking experiences, moving to the other end of the spectrum with a Connecticut shade blend should do the trick. Tatuaje Négociant is a brilliant addition to the lineup, combining L'Atelier's winemaking inspiration with Tatuaje's old/new-world flare. The cigars provide a generous dose of white pepper kick and a fuller body (at least for a Connecticut) to execute the "modern Connecticut" style flawlessly. Besides a great balance of flavor and complexity, other praises include a near-perfect burn and overall stellar construction. My only true criticism is on the cigar's firm draw, but even this provided enough smoke output to make this only a minor issue. Overall, Tatuaje Négociant Monopole No. 4 is quite enjoyable, but to achieve a higher score in a smoke time of only one hour, I'd need to see an unusual display of unique/inspiring flavors and complexities.

The Tatuaje Negociant Monopole No. 3 is a cigar that had a nice mellow flavor profile along with medium strength. This would be a great morning cigar and one that I think would pair very well with coffee. I'm looking forward to smoking this again in that exact pairing scenario.
