Tatuaje Cojonu 2012 Habano

Cigar Coop · Aug 18, 2012

Tatuaje Cojonu 2012 Habano The 2012 IPCPR Trade Show saw the launch of the long-awaited Tatuaje Cojonu 2012 Habano.   This is the third of three Cojonu 2012 blends that have been released.  The differentiator for the Cojonu 2012 Habano is that it has an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper.  Earlier this year, a batch of the Tatuaje […]

Tatuaje Cojonu 2012 Sumatra

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2013

There's a secondary white band wrapped around the corners of the box-pressed Sumatra Tatuaje Cojonu 2012. This is not an age statement. Nor does the secondary band indicate limited-edition status. Last year, it came in three wrapper varieties—Habano, Broadleaf and Sumatra. All three share the same internal Nicaraguan tobacco components, but the Sumatra version is so distinctive with its interplay of black pepper, espresso and cocoa powder flavor, that it landed the No. 9 spot in our Top 25 list. At 6 1/2 inches by 52 ring, the Cojonu 2012 is the same size as the first Cojonu released almost 10 years ago, only this release is box pressed. According to brand owner Pete Johnson the box pressing reduces the airflow thereby concentrating the smoke. The size also holds sentimental value to Johnson as it was not only the original vitola, but a size that was otherwise only smoked around the factory for family and friends. Pronounced Koh-ho-NU, the term is Cuban slang for someone who is brash or ballsy. A Cojonu cigar has been released every three years since 2003. Last year, that came to an end. Johnson decided to stop making any new Cojonu sizes. That's not to say that he's cancelled the Cojonu line. To the contrary, all previous Cojonus will continue to be made and circulated like any other brand.

Tatuaje Cojonú 2012 Sumatra

Cigar Snob · Jan 8, 2024

Since its original release in 2003, the Tatuaje Cojonú line has represented some of Tatuaje’ s most captivating recurring blends, but the 2012 version, which is available in three different wrappers, is certainly one our panel’s favorites. The Sumatra version was the highest rated cigars in the March/April 2023 issue, qualifying it for this list

Chocolate | Earth | Black pepper Evolves into something almost-quite special. Starts as italicized and then savory leather, toasted cream. Chicory. Densly-layered. Decadent not cloying. Creosote(slight) smoky, yet smooth. Fully sating.

Tatuaje Cojonú 2018

Blind Man's Puff · Dec 4, 2023 · May 2023

In 2003, Tatuaje introduced the Cojonú series, drawing inspiration from the Cuban slang word “cojonudo,” which roughly translates to English to to “ballsy”—a nod to the line’s strength. Crafted with an Ecuadorian habano wrapper, Nicaraguan dual binder, and Nicaraguan filler, the series originally aimed for a new release every three years. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. After nearly a decade of regular 3-year intervals, the Cojonú line experienced a hiatus in 2015 and 2018. However, in 2022, Tatuaje rectified the lines absence with the release of Cojonú 2015, hitting stores that October. The line also saw a release in 2021 with the Cojonú, changing the cadence. We reviewed that cigar and gave it a 90. Last year, Pete Johnson, Tatuaje ‘s founder, hinted at the potential release of the 2018 version, and in April 2023, it was confirmed. The Tatuaje Cojonú 2018, a 5 5/8 x 54 robusto extra with a soft box-press, is now available for $13.50 per cigar or $283.50 for a box of 21. The long-awaited sequel started shipping to stores in late May 2023.

Tatuaje Cojonú 2012 Reserva

Halfwheel · Mar 20, 2012 · March 21, 2012

This cigar reminded me a lot of Padrón. For some reason, even if the samples I was smoking are a few months old, the Cojonu 2012 Reserva seems like a cigar that one is going to want to smoke fresh. The flavors are there and developed, and while I think that a bit more complexity might come through, something I'd love to see, I just wonder at what expense. This is by no means my favorite Tatuaje, but I think a lot of people might get caught up in this not being a limited edition and overlook it, which is a shame, as this seems like a near perfect cigar for a lot of Tatuaje fans.
