Tatuaje T110 TUXTLA
Stogie Press · Aug 19, 2022
Named for the home of Mexico’s premium cigar industry the Tatuaje TUXTLA (pronounced Toos-tlah) is one of the latest offerings from Pete Johnson and his iconic Tatuaje Cigars brand. The new blend is built off the famed T110 that was introduced as a limited edition shop exclusive for R. Field Wine & Co in Honolulu, Read more about Cigar Review: Tatuaje T110 TUXTLA – Rated 96[…]

Fans of Tatuaje Cigars know that the company’s Capa Especial cigars have a Sumatra wrapper, the Reserva cigars have a Connecticut Broadleaf Wrapper, and now, Tuxtla cigars will have a Mexican San Andres wrapper. The Capa Especial, Reserva, and now Tuxtla lines are extensions of existing lines with a different spin on the wrapper. The name comes from San Andrés Tuxtla, the city and municipality where a large part of Mexico’s premium cigar industry lives, including the tobacco growing region. In this review, we will look at one of the first cigars released from the company as a Tutxla extension, the Tatuaje T110 Tuxtla. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The original Tatuaje T110 was based on an unreleased cigar called “Thermonuclear,” that Pete Johnson made in 2006 that used 100% ligero tobaccos. In 2009, the first T110 was sold as an exclusive for R. Field Wine Co. in Hawaii. The T stood for Thermonuclear and the 110 is for the length of the cigar, 110mm. While the unreleased Thermonuclear was all ligero, the T110 was not, although very strong, using ligero and high-priming visos. The original Tatuaje T110 only saw a production of 390 boxes of 25, 200 of which were packaged normally and 190 of which were wet-packed in foil. The T110 was not released again until 2021, when we saw not only the original blend come back, but two new variations: Tatuaje T110 Capa Especial, using an Ecuadorian wrapper, and the Tatuaje T110 Reserve, using a Connecticut Broadleaf, and now, in 2022, the Tatuaje T110 Tuxtla with a Mexican San Andres Wrapper. The Tatuaje T110 Tuxtla is, like the rest of the T110 line, a 4 3/8 x 52 petit robusto. It has an MSRP of $10.00 per cigar and had a higher production than the other two extensions, 4,000 boxes of 25.

There was a time when shop exclusive cigars were truly something special. One region that has had many shop-exclusive cigars has been the State of Hawaii. Back in 2009, Tatuaje Cigars released a powerhouse of a cigar known as the Tatuaje T110 (which is believed to mean Thermonuclear 110 with 110 being the approximate length […] Key flavors: Coffee, Chocolate, Earth, Wood, Citrus, Herb, Mixed Pepper.

I remember having a casual debate with Brooks Whittington about which of the trio would be the best. He’s always had a large soft spot for the Capa Especial secondary band and the Sumatra wrapper that comes with it. I’m a fan of the various Capa Especial cigars that have come before this, but I’m also a bit more hesitant to just assume that because I liked the Capa Especiales before it would work with the T110, which is a very different blend than most. My fear was that the process of getting the Sumatra to work would lead to a softening of the overall profile that took away too much from what makes the T110 a unique cigar: its power. I think that happened as this is certainly softer than the early T110s I’ve smoked, the remade T110 from earlier this year and the T110 Reserva. That being said, it’s my favorite of the 2021 versions, and it’s not very close. Everything Brooks hoped would happen—the Sumatra’s flavor adding complexity to pair with the strength—has happened.

Peppery at the start, this short cigar burns and draws evenly to reveal a predominantly earthy smoke of cocoa powder and leather. The nutty macadamia finish also hints of coconut.

This cigar is not thermonuclear , though it never really claimed to be; more along the lines of a derivative of a derivative of something that was once rumored to hold such a title. The Tatuaje T110 Capa Especial is, however, quite flavorful and enjoyable. The cigar starts dry but quickly turns things around, hitting "it factor" flavor components in the mid-section before settling back down for a steady (albeit humdrum) finale.

The Tatuaje T110 Tuxtla came out of the gate swinging with some interesting and fuller flavor combinations that kept me on my toes. That complexity seemed to fall off rapidly moving into the second third, eventually becoming linear and flat in the last third with earth being the only standout flavor component. The price point on these is quite reasonable and the time commitment is approachable so I would give the T110 Tuxtla another try to see if the profile was the same or improved.
