Tatuaje TAA 50th

Nearly a year to the day since the Tatuaje TAA 50th was released, it has seemingly remedied my main complaint from when I first smoked it. At least in the case of this sample, it is far from boring and has definitely woken up quite a bit, showing much more in the way of flavor progression and vibrance. Where it shines most though is depth and complexity, particularly in the first and final thirds. Hopefully the Tatuaje TAA 50th is still on its upward trajectory, as the results could be quite good at the peak if so.

For the first time since 2013, we have a truly new iteration of the beloved TAA blend from Tatuaje. The cigars feature the same overall blend, box-pressed shape, and covered foot, but have been rolled in a new 5" x 52 robusto vitola. A pepper-fueled start leads to much softer and ultra sweet flavors of sugar-coated pastry, butterscotch, dark and bitter chocolate, and an intense blast of heavily sweetened (and creamed) black tea. But while flavors are plentiful, the construction is not quite as stellar, canoeing repeatedly and, worse still, offering a firm draw on most samples. Interestingly, the cigar's soft smoking texture and subdued sweetness were counterbalanced by a hefty strength/body, making for a nice change of pace, as far as the average maduro profile goes.

Every year, Tatuaje has released an exclusive cigar for the Tobacconists’ Association of America (TAA). This has become one of Tatauje’s most sought out releases. Some years, Pete Johnson releases a similar blend as a previous year in a different size, some years it’s a new blend, and some years he will bring back previous releases. The Tatuaje TAA 2020 is a completely new blend with a wrapper that he’s never used on a TAA before. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. This years version uses a Sumatra wrapper and comes in a 5 5/8 x 54 box-pressed size. The rest of the blend uses Nicaraguan tobacco. The price for the Tatuaje TAA 2020 is $11.95 per cigar and comes in boxes of 20. Only 3,000 boxes were released.

Factoring in the depth and intensity of flavors, full body and just a well executed version of a Connecticut Broadleaf, this is one of the best offerings of Tatuaje I have smoked.
