The original Viaje Circa ’45 line was launched at the InterTabac trade show in 2016 It was a European exclusive for a year before coming to the U.S. in 2017. In December of 2017, Viaje also released a Maduro version. Fast forward to January of this year (2021) and Viaje announced a new reserva version, called the Viaje Circa ’45 Reserva. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend for Viaje Circa ’45 Reserva uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper in place of the original Nicaraguan leaf used and is limited to 300 boxes in each vitola. All comes in boxes of 25 with the exception of the Edición Limitada which comes in bundles. There are four vitolas: No. 1 (5 x 52) – $12, No. 2 (6 x 54) – $12.80, No. 3 (5 1/2 x 58) – $13.60, and Edición Limitada (7 x 50) – $13.20.

A tall toro made with a round head and oily cover leaf. Its tangy notes of wood and lemon peel frame the nutty, cashew core and the sweet buttercream finish.

Viaje Circa ’45 Reserva Edición Limitada

If you are looking for the familiar—and oftentimes overwhelming—combination of pepper, spice and strength that can be found in a number Viajes, you won’t find it here. In fact, you might want to consider the Circa ’45 Reserva Edición Limitada as sort of a anti-Viaje: where there is normally an abundance of the aforementioned spice, pepper and strength, this blend features a profile with more smoothness and balance than I have tasted in one of the company’s creations in quite some time. Having said that, the profile is fairly linear—dominated at all times by a combination of dark chocolate and cedar—and lacks any sort of noticeable progression. In the end, the Viaje Circa ’45 Reserva Edición Limitada is an enjoyable enough blend, but the typical Viaje smoker may be disappointed by what they find.

Viaje Circa ’45 Reserva Edición Limitada

The Viaje Circa ’45 Reserva Edición Limitada was a pretty average flavor experience, and when you factor in the price tag, I'd say a disappointing delivery for a Limitada release. I would not smoke this cigar again, there are numerous other Viaje offerings that are more affordable and provide a significantly better flavor experience.
