AVO Improvisation Series LE20

Cigar Dojo · Dec 16, 2020

Being an expected release each year, AVO doesn't always make a spectacle of their annual Improvisation Series release. Such was the case with the Improvisation Series LE20, being announced at the start of this year without even taking center stage within a slew of 2020 announcements. But for those in the know, the release is among the most anticipated each year, often utilizing unique tobaccos and the chance to achieve something great. The 2020 edition, in my opinion, is one such case, being perhaps the finest smoking experience released this year. The cigar holds its own against famed cigars such as the AVO LE05, having a similar profile and level of complexity, though leaning more toward sweet nougat and cream and away from the LE05's polarizing botanicals. Add to this a longer smoking time (which is basically my only criticism of the LE05), and you have yourself a truly memorable smoking experience, operating at a caliber that only a select few achieve.

This is what cigar dreams are made of. This is not a strong cigar by any means, but it has flavor in spades and three words stuck with me as I was smoking this stick: complex, creamy and smooth. This is an excellent example of what a mild to medium cigar should taste like with flavors changing every time you turn around and just the right amount of spice to draw it all together. Throw in an amazing burn and draw for the entire cigar and you have an almost perfect specimen.

Avo 75th Anniversary

Cigar Aficionado · Jun 1, 2001

This attractive, reddish-brown has a firm bunch and a perfectly rounded head. It draws well, showing toasty, coffee flavors with hints of nuts. A delicious cigar that will only improve as it ages.

Avo Uvezian La Trompeta

Stogies on the Rocks · May 18, 2012

I’m a sucker for great packaging and great marketing. I just wished that cigar would have backed it up with an outstanding product. The flavor was great on this cigar, I just wish they would have taken more time to make sure the construction was as outstanding as the packaging. Great looking cigar that has a great story. it would look great in any humidor, but I don’t know if I would buy more than one after having smoked it.

While I'd gladly smoke more, it probably isn't something I'd go out of my way to smoke again which is a bit of an odd conclusion based on how the cigar scored for me. As an anniversary cigar for the brand, I think it is a good representation of the core lines and what the brand was built on.
