Aging Room Room Rare Collection Scherzo

Last July, for the first time in over a year, Aging Room released a new cigar. The Aging Room Rare Collection is a collaboration between original Aging Room creator Rafael Nodal and long time Altadis Collaborator, AJ Fernandez. The cigars are rolled at AJ’s factory in Nicaragua and uses specially selected rare tobaccos. Nodal noted in a press release that this is the first blend in a planned series of Rare Collection projects. The Rare Collection will be created in small runs based on availability of rare and aged tobaccos. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend for Aging Room Rare Collection is a Nicaraguan puro including a hybrid Cuban-seed wrapper grown on the La Lilia farm and some pelo de oro. It also features a pig-tail cap. The cigars come in 10-count boxes and three different vitolas: Festivo (52 x 4 1/2) MSRP: $15.00, Scherzo (55 x 5 1/2) MSRP: $15.50, and Vivase (60 x 6) MSRP: $15.95.

Topped with a tight pigtail cap, this tan cigar has an excellent draw and burn. It’s toasty at first, followed by notes of sweet and savory graham cracker and nutmeg with a touch of German chocolate cake.

Aging Room’s Rare Collection is a stronger cigar than expected, with earthy/musty notes and deep oak wood flavors. It’s well constructed, with some unique, rare tobaccos. It is, however, a regular production, so I can't help but feel that the concept is a bit misleading. Regardless, the cigar is fairly classic in profile for those familiar with Nicaraguan Habanos—I'm just not quite there on the price/value.

Aging Room Rare Collection Scherzo

The Aging Room Rare Collection Scherzo did not have the most compelling of starts. While there wasn’t anything wrong with the first third, it pales in comparison to the flavors offered in the second and final thirds. Where the score suffers is with the construction, which I would describe as finicky. Even after lighting up three cigars, I’m still not entirely sure what the technical issue with the draws was or were, but each one struggled to provide a consistent experience from puff to puff, which caused me to both puff quicker than I wanted and also having to use the lighter to keep the cigars from going out. From a pure flavor perspective, the final two thirds of the Aging Room Rare Collection Scherzo are probably my favorite Aging Room I’ve smoked, but excellent flavor won't make up for poor construction.

I found the Aging Room Rare Collection Scherzo to be a one-dimensional offering that delivered this dry and not your classic Nicaraguan flavor profile. It really showed some Honduran qualities in some ways, and not the Honduran qualities I enjoy. The strength and body diminishing in the second and final third helped, but only because the flavor profile would have not been enjoyable with additional strength.
