The story of Aging Room revolves around a central character who had no idea he was headed for the cigar business: Rafael Nodal. It's a timeline of transitions, partnerships and collaborations that ultimately lead to the creation of the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Maestro, Cigar Aficionado's 2019 Cigar of the Year.But first we rewind back almost 40 years ago to 1980, when Nodal came to the U.S. from Cuba as a refugee on the infamous Mariel boatlift. With no background in cigars, Nodal sought a career in music that brought him to New York City, then to Miami where he embarked on a more practical career in healthcare. There, he met his future business partners Hank Bischoff and Dr. Alina Cordoves (now his wife).Nodal's foray into the cigar world was slow. In 1998, he and his partners began selling cigars online, and in 2002 they took over the Habana Cuba Cigar Co., a struggling company with a mediocre portfolio of forgettable cigars. For a while, the business situation was looking quite grim.Not one to be easily discouraged, Nodal explored the concept of producing cigars in small batches. In 2011 he came out with a new brand called Aging Room Small Batch M356. He also changed the name of his company from Habana Cuba Cigar Co. to Boutique Blends. The first Aging Rooms were made by José "Jochy" Blanco in the Dominican Republic. (Blanco is also a partner in the brand.) The cigars scored well in Cigar Aficionado, and the Presto size was named to the 2011 Top 25. Nodal got his first taste of critical success—and he kept going.Today, you'd be forgiven if the name Aging Room creates a bit of confusion. There are a lot of different Aging Rooms made in different factories. The crowning achievement, however, is the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Maestro made by A.J. Fernandez in Nicaragua.The cigar is essentially Nodal's vision, crafted by Fernandez with his distinct tobacco and signature factory style. Every last leaf in this blend is Nicaraguan and every puff is an overture of flavors that's at times heavy and rich with notes of dark chocolate and wood, and other times, subtle and understated with hints of fine caramel and toasted almonds. In musical terms, the word for this box-pressed torpedo would be dynamic.Nodal is still an artist at heart and cigars continue to be his creative outlet. If the birth of Aging Room was his breakthrough, consider the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Maestro his masterpiece.

I’m smoking an Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua in the Maestro size, a cigar blended by Aging Room brand founder Rafael Nodal and cigarmaker AJ Fernandez. The Maestro was awarded Cigar Aficionado’s ‘#1 Cigar of the Year’ title in 2019. The blend continues to collect impressive ratings from the critics, and when I pull this 6-by-52 box-pressed Torpedo from a fresh box, its oily wrapper piques my curiosity. Rafael Nodal, a classically trained musician, arrived in the U.S. in 1980 from his native Cuba during the controversial Mariel boatlift.

Unfortunately, my lasting thought about the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Concerto Vibrato is that once the cigar had combustion issues, they wouldn’t go away. When they showed up during the third cigar, they wouldn't stop. Unfortunately for the first cigar, they were there from the first section on. The second cigar required just one touch-up, and so perhaps that offers the clearest picture of what this cigar should be. Even that is a bit tough to parse. This is a cigar that seems to engage about a third of the flavor wheel—earthy, starchy and pepper—but largely ignores the other aspects. Sweetness, acidity and a more pronounced saltiness would have gone a long way to add dimensions to the profile.

I had high expectations for the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Vibrato (Toro 6 x 54) cigar, since the the Maestro (Torpedo 6 x 52) vitola scored an impressive 94 rating in the March/April 2019 edition ofCigar Aficionadomagazine. The rating was two points higher than the 92 given to a Fuente Fuente Opus X Perfecxion, in the same magazine. Well, I must respectfully disagree. Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua cigars are box pressed Nicaraguan puros, made entirely with Nicaraguan tobaccos (wrapper, binder and fillers). The cigars are available in four sizes, with the Torpedo and Toro selling for $10.95 and $11.00, respectively. The Vibrato (Toro) cigar that was sampled began with an obvious taste of pepper, that gradually backed off a bit during the first five minutes, when an earthy and leathery taste became predominate, with notes of pepper in the background. The body was medium-to-full, but near the upper end of that range (let's call it 4+ on a 5-scale). About half-way through, there was a hint of cream as the cigar became just slightly smoother. The cigar held a long ash, had a great draw, and had a mostly even burn. Only one minor touch-up was needed during the 75 minutes that it took me to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining. I rate the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Vibrato cigar with a respectable 3.5 points on a 5-point scale. Neither a bad smoke, nor an outstanding (bordering on classic) smoke, asCigar Aficionado'srating would suggest.
